New Navy Regs…Will this apply at USNA?

I just received this

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Until the Naval Academy and the Superintendent have updated their policies on the uniform standards, we are NOT permitted to put hands in our pockets, wear tiaras or wear fake eyelashes in uniform.
The Dant is classmate of mine AND we went to TBS together...I can't imagine ANY of the Marines on The Yard are happy about the hands in pockets change!

^ This. I'm going to guess that it is going to take a long time before the MIDINST gets reviewed and changed.
Yes
USNA can and often does have stricter regulations/standards than "Big Navy".
Examples: Mustaches and Physical Standards.

Things get loose sometime. Squadron cover. With one side up very rakish. Both sides down with poncho in Monsoon and everybody looked like Clint Eastwood.

I have been out awhile now actually a LONG time but I would imagine there will be some exciting conversations between The Chief and his guys and gals that goes something like I really don’t give a Sh** what that new regulation says. If I catch you with your (bad word) in your pockets there will be hell to pay. Maybe a new regulation but I bet some “old timers” won’t let it be implemented fully for sometime.

At least that is how I would like to think it would be.

Don’t crush my dreams!

The black is the NWU Type I liner. There's a tan one that was made for the NWU Type III. Originally the Type III was organizational clothing only, and the tan liner was issued along with the rest of the uniform. Most importantly, the tan liner had pockets.

They should make the NWU fleece authorized for wear with coveralls too.

I also have opinions about the black rank tab. Some O-6 somewhere got way too salty about not being saluted.

I didn’t know the tan liner existed for the NWUs. I think it would look better than black, though.

Black rank tabs look silly. My 2Lt roommates make fun of them often.

I’m thoroughly enjoying walking around with my hands in my pockets.

I have seen so many GOFOs, FORCMs, and FLTCMs with their hands deep in their pockets during all hands or town halls.

The oldest of timers are the ones most guilty of it.

There's also the aviator dip, the salt list, and--oddest for me--brown boots in NWUs.

Met and conversed with the Dant a couple of times, thanks to DD's billets as a firstie. I have a very, very hard time picturing him with hands in pockets.

During the trial period for Type III’s they had the rank on the collar. The Type IIIs also had ranks on the 8 point for a little before they said it was only the ACE. I think it made it easier to see rank that way, but I also get the Navy is trying to emulate the USMC.

I was stationed at BUMED when it was in DC. One day a buddy and I went to the uniform shop at the Navy Annex in Arlington. This was when the soft shoulder boards for the wooly pully was first authorized for chiefs. There had been a lot of controversy about it with chiefs mumbling things like, "They want us to look like officers and dumb things like that."

We were walking down the p-way and saw the MCPON outside his office talking with somebody. Buddy mentioned it looked like he was wearing the new shoulder boards. I snickered. We almost walked on to the stairs leading down to the store and noticed he was glaring at us, waiting for us to greet him. Well. maybe just staring at us but me and my big mouth said, "Oh, good morning mic-pon, we thought you were an officer."

The person he was speaking with gasped and my buddy, an HMCM, called me a dirty name and we scurred away. The MCPON spoke at a conference/luncheon I attended a few weeks later and I avoided him for over an hour until I was able to escape.

Are you referring to the tan boots or the brown flight boots?

Not everyone may have a flight suit to wear. Aircraft maintenance personnel wear NWUs, so typically you’ll see officers in maintenance departments wearing brown boots with them. That said, my command issues all non-flyers tan Bellevilles. Also, the brown boots break in better and are more comfortable than the black safety boots. For the record, as aircrew, I wear my brown boots with NWUs whenever I have to brush the dust off and where them.

I've been out with an air wing, I get it. Just looks wrong. Especially now with the black rank tab--you got green camo, dark brown boots, a tan command ballcap, and the stupid black bit in the middle.

I can't wait for the 2POC, it's gonna look great...and just when I threw out all of my blue undershirts...

All in all, I don't think we here in the Navy have ever really cared too much about uniform regulations to begin with. I still see LCDRs with shoulderboards in mess dress because they never bothered to read uniform regulations in the 12 years between USNA and now. But it's an easy way to spot the Academy grads from everyone else.

I’d agree with nuensis about lack of caring for uniform regulations…like why do aviators wear the flight suit in a non-flying duty status (orders) if flight suits are considered organizational clothing and are only to be worn for the purpose they are designed for (i.e. flying, flight line work, etc.)?

This was sent out to the brigade a few hours before your post.

"The changes in NAVADMIN 031/24 do not apply to USNA midshipmen, but with one exception. As the “hands in pockets” is a no-cost change, that is allowed immediately, but with three caveats:" USMC selects in Marpats, Special Events, Saluting.
