New USNA Superintendent 2024

The part she read her orders was really cool.
That’s when it gets real.

The reading of orders and the “relieving” exchange in front of the reporting senior is all that is actually required. Can be done in 10 minutes with none of the ceremony, if required.

No matter what, the burden of command settled on her shoulders the minute she says “I relieve you,” and it was acknowledged by the reporting senior.

Gave me chills :usa:

Both outgoing and incoming speeches — by Adm. Kacher and Adm. Davids — were so gracious, warm and genuine. BZ to both in their new roles.

I heard in a rather old interview that command of USNA is a terminal assignment. Is that still true?

I believe so. They bumped it to 3 star but with caveat of retirement. This prevents current supes from working on next gig.

I didn't get the whole "working on the next gig" thing. What's the conflict of interest there?
I have no idea. Several Google searches only mention keeping the position independent of command influence, so they can act more like a school president.

That makes sense. They can speak truth to power and do what's right in a special way since they don't have to worry about their next billet.
I've sometimes wondered if being named USNA Supe is a very bittersweet moment. Happy to return to the pleasant confines of the Yard. Sad to know it's your last command before retirement.
Bittersweet indeed! I wonder how many of them are supprised by it and didn't realize they were getting out vs. already knowing they had only 1 more assignment before turning in the stars.

I can't imagine anyone being surprised by it. They are required to acknowledge it when accepting the position.

Yes. Many Supe’s have acknowledged this. It’s a great transitional billet, especially if higher education is of interest post retirement. Puts someone in the DC if they want to retire and pursue many careers in that area. Stars are a weird world. They can come really quick or you can stall out quickly and retire as well. The Dant billet used to be a twilight tour. That changed 15-ish or more years ago. Now it’s usually someone on their way to stars and generally get selected while there.
