Greetings all! Long time follower but figured it was time to get active as DS is gearing up to be part of the Class of 2026. So much great advice on the forum and to see everyone navigate the process. Any general advice for a student with excellent grades but average test scores? That is the only thing DS is worried about. Unweighted 3.95, 27 ACT (28 on STEM), taking SAT soon, third year varsity wrestler (unless COVID says otherwise), and is a volunteer youth wrestling coach. He's not much for joining clubs just to join but has been coaching younger wrestlers for four years which he is passionate about. I have also heard that my neck of the woods is not that competitive for some reason which is shocking. Looking forward to the journey. Cheers!

I had one who struggled with one section of the ACT in particular. He studied. Tested. Retested. Took the other test (SAT).

It wasnt until he did a couple online one-on-one tutoring sessions that it clicked! He had been doing the same, ineffective (for him) methods again and again and again. No results. With this tutors different perspective, he was able to make sense of it all and had a huge improvement.

My point, is that finding what works is key. Try another method. Another test. Some one-on-one for clarity (they were great at pinpointing his issue, so he could self prep effectively). Sometimes simply practicing MORE isnt the answer. So that’s my advice...try some other methods of studying. And I personally highly recommend a one-on-one focus if that would be beneficial. There were all different price point. I think ours was $40. Lower end.

Welcome! Exciting times!

Welcome. Love the 3ID patch and deeply respect the history of the “Rock of the Marne”. Good luck on the long march to the intended goal.

Welcome aboard! I assume he's applying USMA and AROTC? I too find it hard to believe NC-8 is not competitive with Fayetteville and Bragg in the district or right next door. Good luck to your son.

My DS Marine officer was a wrestler. Couldn't play a damn thing that involved a ball, but he sure could wrestle.

Welcome. I am a high school counselor, always looking for ways to boost scores, not just for my students, but for my own kids, one who is taking the ACT for the first time next Saturday. I found some really great ACT prep videos on Youtube from a guy that says he went from a 19 to some insane score. He breaks down different portions of the test and gives good points. Another idea I have is to use Khan academy to link your old SAT scores and then practice your weaker points. I had a student that went from a 1280 to a 1480 just from using Khan academy 5 days a week for 6 weeks, focusing on his weaknesses.

Hope that helps and good luck to your son! We are in NC too, but looking at the C/O of 2027 and 2029 potentials.

Welcome and good luck to your son. My son worked through the same challenge - excellent grades and class rank. I would recommend taking the ACT and SAT. Some kids do noticeably better on one than the other. My son also benefited greatly by using a test to focus entirely on Math or the Reading/Writing and he tapped into the wealth of online resources to focus his prep before each test. His scores came up in both areas on two separate tests (primarily SAT).
