NJ Nominations

DS hasn't heard from them.... He already has a nom. From Holt for AFA and USMA and doesn't expect to hear from the Senators....he doesn't think he did well on the interviews.

Hi everyone,

I'm a current junior and based on how you guys have applied for your nominations already, are there any specific recommendation requirements to apply? (ie. you need to have a math, lit, guidance counselor rec?)

If any of you are from district 5, can you fill me in on the recommendation requirements for Rep Scott Garrett?

Thanks!

each congressman may be different. My Congressman from district 7 required 3 letters of rec, and other paperwork had to be completed my by guidance counselor.

There is Garrett's website for SA Noms. As soon as you get word from NASS I'd start asking him about nom requirements. They are different from district to district, but generally SAT/ACT 3 LORs, list of activities, and an essay prompt mainly about why you want to go to an SA.

I think your interview honestly makes the biggest difference, but don't blow off the application either.

Here is the site for the Senator nom form (http://menendez.senate.gov/services/academy/academy_application.pdf?x=118&y=16). They both (Menendez and Lautenberg) use the same one, and it has been the same for the past two years.

Best of luck to you.

For Scott Garrett: go to his website and follow instructions to request a nomination packet. It is different from the senators' applications and it is not on-line, it is a paper application. About 12-15 short essays and seven recommendation forms...plus SATs, transcripts, resume. It will be due at the end of Sept. or early October. Best to get it started during the spring of Junior year.

A quick tip for Scott Garrett's application. Definitely get it done before summer, because trying to get in touch with your teachers over the summer can be a real pain. Also getting it done soon shows that you are motivated and want the nom.:thumb:

Haha thank you for the replies; however, I was wondering if there was a requirement for which teachers we get recommendations from. Does West Point or Congressman Garrett or both senators want teacher recommendations? I looked at the websites, but cannot find specific info regarding who exactly to get recommendations from. I'm wondering whether there is a mandatory math, lit, guidance counselor, etc requirement rather than getting recs from coaches, extra curricular advisors, etc.

I don't think there is a requirement, though to be sure I would check with your Congressman's office and ask them, as each rep. may have slightly different requirements. However generally I would say go for a variety of different sources. Maybe one school teacher, a coach, and someone who knows you in an entirely different context (read: not school.) I was homeschooled, so it's a bit different, but I asked an English prof at the college I currently attend, a homeschooling mom who's taught me a variety of classes, and a senior member in the Civil Air Patrol program.

BTW, got a call from Menendez's office two days ago...got my second nomination! (Menendez and Holt)

I am from NJ 05 as well for the prospective class of 2017, Navalacademy i sent you a pm.

Is serfinity the only one who has heard back from Menendez yet, or has he already released all his nominations already?

And what about Lautenberg? Thanks.

DS hasn't heard anything from them. Rec'd congress nominations but nothing yet.....

I just checked my West Point Portal and under nominations it says received form NJ09 and NJ62. I guess this is from my Congressman and one of the Senators? Also how do you know if your the number one nomination or just an alternate?

Just got a nomination from congressman Garrett, NJ-05 to West Point!

I called Senator Menendez's office yesterday, and he has made final decisions regarding appointments. Unfortunately, I didn't receive one. However, I received news that Senator Lautenberg has nominated me to the United States Military Academy!

Good luck to all the other fist-pumpers out there.

Just called Senator Lautenberg's office and I received a nomination to USAFA! They said nothing has been officially released yet but they are willing to tell you what their decision was on your individual file. I received one last year but no luck with the appointment, hopefully this year will be different!! Still no word from Senator Menendez yet.

DS rec'd nomination to AFA and USMa from Holt but only AFA is showing it on his portal. DS rec'd a letter from Holt on Friday saying he was giving him the AFA nomination which he has known since Decembjer but it said nothing about USMA. DS still has the voicemail that the congressman left him about both academy's. DS has sent emails to USMa and has left messages at his congressmans office but hasn't heard anything. Anyone having the same issues?
