Norwich University

I'm not continuing Enlistment
Try college first, enlisted service has a larger time window. Talking to my son about other cadets. He told me that there are many cadets at Norwich that never plan to commission. They are getting their college hours out of the way before enlisted active duty time so they will have one less thing to worry about on active duty when they advance to the NCO ranks.
As long as you have a plan you will be "OK".

Thanks!

I still have utmost intention to commission, assuming that I commit to Norwich after I visit at the end of this month.

If you get ROTC scholarship the room/board is free. Nice.

But it is located in a rural, cold location far from anything. Far from cities, airports, etc. Burlington is an hour's drive away. Some skiing nearby, if that's your thing. Not too many co-eds either. Definitely not a party school (though there is an underground drinking culture that's existed for generations). Boston & New York are a hike.

If your primary intention is getting an officer's commission it's not a bad deal.
Even being from Vermont, those are all concerns shared by my son (although the "not too many co-eds" factor is a concern he also has about the Citadel - in fact, it is more pronounced there than at Norwich). I can say with authority that yes, it is cold here from late October through late April and yes, there is nothing going on in the Town of Northfield, Vermont outside of campus. For some, those can be pluses. If you love the outdoors, then Norwich is a great place to be (plenty of hiking; boating; fishing; and skiing options). There is mountain that is literally located on the front steps of the Norwich campus. It does seem like there are a lot of things to do right on campus as well and the facilities there are amazing. We've half-jokingly said that if you could combine the Norwich price and campus with the location and climate of the Citadel and the male/female ratio and sports atmosphere of Virginia Tech, you would have the perfect SMC.

Norwich does have a party atmosphere, students just have to know where to look! This is the school made infamous by a panty raid that ended with the state troopers losing a battle with the Cadets, after all.

Unfortunately, a lot of the partying goes too far and things happen - like students tasing for fun and for hazing, waterboarding each other, and the new favorite, branding each other.

Which SMA to attend should boil down to what career the student wants to have as a citizen soldier. Wanna be in law enforcement, cyber or nursing? Choose Norwich. Wanna be an engineer? Choose VMI or thr Citadel. Want a business degree to move into marketing or business admin? Choose the Citadel.

Just like the SA, Norwich sucks while you're there, but it's a goodnolave to be from.

Engineering or Cyber, or anything STEM; TAMU hands down but not your traditional SMC. TIER 1 research facilities with huge research endowments. TAMU is a 2,000 cadet corps on a 80k SEC campus.

MHO....an Aggie Dad with a Norwich son.
