Typically how are you notified if and when you are granted an appointment. Is it possible to receive notification by mail from your MOC before your portal is updated?

First they notify your MOC in case they want to give you the good news themselves. Then the portal updates and you get an email.

This is something we have wondered about at our house as well!! DS has 3nom’s (two are principal noms for sure). And a ‘guaranteed offer of appointment’ as its called in his email (LOA in his portal), awaiting a form he has already submitted. Has passed dodmerb so wondering how it all magically turns into an appointment, and who tells him? Will it be one of the nom’s ? Hoping to find out soon, but very curious!!

PS: it was a very Navy Christmas. Everyone received stuff from the usna store. THAT was super fun!!

Once USNA makes a decision they notify their MOC. The MOC is given around 5 days to call a new appointee. A MOC isn’t required to call, but USNA gives them the chance to. Many MOCs or a staffer will call. Once that pre-determined time passes (its around 5ish days but none of us know for sure) the portal will update. BFEs usually arrive around a few days to a few weeks after the portal update.

My son received an email as soon as his portal updated from LOA to official appointment(early November), his MOC called about a week or so later to congratulate him and just last week he received an official certificate in the mail.

Remember that it's an OFFER of appointment. They still have to make it through processing and take that oath on June 28th.
They may want to stay off motorcycles and skateboards, until then. :)

New parent member here... is there a legend that says what the acronyms being used are? I’m trying to catch/keep up... DD, DS, BFE, etc— yikes! Thanks.

Go to Community Information - The Acronym List is there.

The DS/DD - dear son, dear daughter...

The BFE is the Big Fat Envelope (for those SAs who use postal mail) for appointment stuff. A good thing. TWE - thin white envelope or email - bad news.

Gee, thanks!

I received a LOA on the 15th and completed the requirements on the 19th, do y'all know how long it takes for the offer of appointment to be uploaded to a portal and for it to be delivered?

With the holiday - it may take a little longer - but rest assured that the offer will be coming. Congratulations!

When you say you finished the requirements on the 19th does your portal reflect these changes? Remember, in the case of a Nom for instance, just because a MOC informed you of it, doesn’t mean USNA has received an official slate yet. Same thing with DoDMERB to update to the portal from their system. Not saying this is your case, just an example. Also with the holiday lots of folks are on vacation. I would venture to say you could hear any day to end of January.

This EXACT thing just happened for DS yesterday! DS received a forward of the USNA’s email to the staffer, which stated he is offered appointment and that it will be loaded into his portal next Tuesday (January 1st), allowing time for them to notify DS. Email said USNA will also inform other two nom sources as he had also received those nom’s. We had wondered about the charging of the appointment, and that was settled as the email said the appointment was charged to this senator. We are over the moon ecstatic!!

Question: does the BFE contain the appointment offer? I thought it came when appointment offer was accepted by the candidate. Will DS be receiving a BFE before accepting (assuming he waits to accept)?

If I remember correctly he will accept online the offer of appointment. Most the forms will be done online. The BFE is usually a nice blue folder with a letter in it and picture. Probably seen some on social media sites as many kids post them. In the Spring USNA will release the permit to report packet that will have tons of other info such as shots, travel docs, etc. If you search the forum you can usually find the old PTR info to get an idea of what that looks like.

Just a note, who someone ultimately gets charged to can change over and over as USNA puts together a class. It’s a giant puzzle for Admissions and it can change several times for someone who has multiple noms. Where someone ultimately gets charged isn’t a big deal. A Nom is a Nom. Many Mids won’t even know who they are charged to unless they look.

Gives me literal goosebumps as I read about the BFE’s. Also makes my stomach roll as I realize I-day is EXACTLY 6 mos from today. Sad and glad all rolled into one thought. I can’t imagine what the candidates think....

Thank you, my MOC called me last night and told me I should hear back in about 2 days!

DD saw all the magic updates in her portal. It became real when the BFE arrived in the mail.
New to forum as of tonight...son received LOA in Oct, and phone call about nomination exactly one week ago (final item required). He can see that the nomination status was updated on his portal. From what I'm reading for your daughter's magic updates, it didn't take long for the BFE to arrive? We have been curious about the timeframe. If the candidates accept offers of appointment right away, which my son plans to do, I assume it's not too early to start making reservations for I-day (for myself and husband)? Thank you for any additional info

It can vary on how fast a BFE comes. With the holidays it can slow down. Also as we approach the end of application season Admissions had a lot of paperwork to deal with too. And yes, if you know DS is going to accept his appointment, it’s not too early to make a reservation.
