For all those who might be wondering, my online status changed today at roughly 5:30pm.

What determines who receives a "select letter"? Does every recipient eventually receive a letter?

If you are selected for a scholarship, you are sent a package with a letter stating you have been selected.

In April after all boards are held and placed, if not selected, you will receive a letter stating you were not selected at this time.

Any recent awards? Anyone still waiting to hear back from a board?

 Don't ask Luckymacy. Unfortunately we're still waiting and quite frankly have gone on to plan B and C.
DS did apply for AROTC. It's funny how things work out sometimes. Maybe Navy just isn't where he's meant to be.

Anyhow, this whole process has undoubtedly taught me some patience. Hopefully in the end I'll be much better from it all.

DS is still waiting... online still says the same thing...can't understand what's oging on...A student, Eagle Scout, Boys State, a ton of extra leadership stuff and 1300 on SAT's, also fences. Did get a MOC nomination to AFA and West Point but nothing so far from Navy. Plan B and C are looking like the way to go so now we have to find the money and which School has the best ROTC.
DS is calm but not us... HELP!:confused::bang:

Congrats to everyone else who has heard so far!

OK. some intell.

I spoke with a LT at a very large and popular Battalion that is high on my DDs list, and which is normally all filled up by November of each year.

Contrary to what he reported to me two weeks ago in another call, the latest is that they have been authorized a total of 42 freshman scholarships, of which 33 have been offered through the multiple Boards as of two days ago. They are allowed to have 35 scholarship acceptances, which I believe is a hard cap across the country (I could be wrong on that point).

The 42 they can initially offer is about the same amount they offered last year, so THIS Battalion, at least, is not way down from last year in the number of Freshman 4 year scholarship offers extended to their Battalion.

Now the Battalion needs to see how many of the 33 Offered do not accept (another Battalion, an Academy, or another ROTC), so that they can use many of the the remaining Initial Offers to fill up to the 35 they are allowed. The 35 slots are for FRESHMAN 4 year scholarships, and does not include STA-21 or MECEP participants in NROTC.

This has me a little confused. Do the battalions at certain schools or the boards look at your first choices and slots available in those battalions to determine scholarships. The reason I ask is because I have been accepted to my first choice school. I called to talk to the commander and he said that they had plenty of slots open, and that they usually never fill up. It's a school down south. Is this a good sign??????

it means IF you are awarded a scholarship, and if there are many open slots at the #1 school listed on your application, the NSTC will assign you to that #1 school+the schools with which it has cross-town affiliations. That school+affiliates doesn't have any say in it. that's the way NROTC is, in contrast to AROTC.

Now, just to get the award................

It didn't work out that way for our son last year. He had large state school as his strongly desired #1 and a very expensive, highly selective school as #2. He was awarded the scholarship to #2 in November, even though there were still open slots at #1. It was explained to him that due to his scores/grades, he was seen a likely candidate for admission to school #2 (where slots went routinely unfilled), whereas school #1 had no trouble filling it's slots. Luckily, he received an appointment to his first choice - USNA - so it all worked out in the end! :thumb:

^ OK, that actually makes sense. If college choice #1 usually ends the award season with unfilled slots, and college choice #2 is much harder to fill because of higher academic entrance requirements, then awarding a high statted applicant #2 first is rational. If this high statted awardee doesn't ultimately get into highly selective college #2, or really doesn't want to attend #2, he/she can easily (since #1 always has unfilled slots) transfer his/her award to #1 in May or June.

Oh, sorry your son had to settle for the Academy... :tomcat: How did plebe year work out? My nephew is a firstie headed into pilot training this summer.

Ok, a little insight on NROTC placement. Units caps change, they don't necessarily know how their cap is split up. From that cap it is broken up to include Marines, then split to ensure that a certain percentage is placed instate.

If you don't get chosen, will they not tell you until after the last board? Or will they tell you right away?

NOT TRUE Florida DAD.

Not everyone is rolled over. Many will receive the thin envelope and told at this time, thanks, but no thanks.

You only rolled over to the next board if you are on the cusp.

FWIW, because SA's use the MOC system(geographic), and ROTC uses national, it is not uncommon for candidates to not get a scholarship, but win an apptmt.

It comes down to the system.

No actually you get an email first. I am presuming they haven't had the email so they are still in the pot.

Nice use of caps though.
