DS is looking at Plan C: attending a college with a NROTC program, and wants to affiliate as a non-scholarship student in hopes of getting a 3-year scholarship once he’s there. He’s in the process of contacting the recruiter for his college where he has been accepted, and is not getting a return call or email. I’ve suggested he notify them that he is medically qualified through DoDMERB from his various academy applications, and to email his high school resume. Any other suggestions? If he does affiliate with a unit, when would he report? Do they have any summer programs where they report to the college prior to the rest of the student body?

I hope he is actually getting on the phone and calling the officers at the unit to let them know he is coming. Keep calling every number he can find until he gets through to someone. Each school may or may not require enrollees to report earlier than the other freshman It depends on how they run their program.

He'll need to be scheduled to attend Indoc at Great Lakes for 3 weeks in one of two session this summer. They'll also begin letting him know what else he needs to do, what forms he needs to fill out, what date he needs to report to the unit, and what classes he must register for. Having passed DoDMERB will be extraneous at this time but useful later. Most walk-ons will not have been through that process yet nor do they need to until they're about to contract. Doesn't hurt to let them know though.

Have many been notified (invited) of the 3 weeks in Great Lakes ? Opinion on requesting session 1 or 2 ?

Thank you. He is calling every day. He has called the main office and they give him the recruiter’s number. He calls and leaves a message. And he has emailed. He’ll keep trying. We are going to visit the college in 2 weeks and, if nothing else, will drop in to the ROTC office.

Kinnem +100
Next email (assuming both methods attempted), put a receipt tracker on. Then he can at least know his info was received.

I might also try someone else, say the PNS. Hopefully that will get someone's attention. Always be respectful no matter how frustrated you get while attempting to make contact.

My son is a College Programmer. He contacted the NROTC Unit directly and scheduled a meeting when he came down for a college visit-- even before he knew he hadn't received a scholarship. Each school should have a website with contact information and an email/phone for contact. We did not go through a recruiter. My son had to fill out an NROTC application specific to his school, have a physical exam by an MD, perform a PRT and have a face-to-face interview with the Unit's CO. We had to purchase some clothing/gear and he had to be there a week early for NSO (which is now different I understand).

Thank you. It was the actual ROTC recruiting contact at the college unit that he was attempting to reach for the last 2 weeks who had not returned his messages until this morning. He finally made contact today and is expecting to receive the application and a link to schedule an appointment when we visit. Thank you all!

Oh! Good news!! These folks are so busy at this time of the year and wear many hats. Glad it all worked out!
