NROTC - Pays for Tuition. But There was Rumor of Change to Pay for Either Tuition or Room and Board

I had read last year that the Navy was considering changing the scholarship to give the recipient a choice of whether to use the scholarship for either tuition or room and board. (Yes, I know there are some schools that will pay for room and board if the student get the NROTC scholarship. That is not what I am asking.) Any word on if or when this change is coming?

I have 6 Mids who opted for Room and Board. This was in motion last year and all units should have received word on how to do this. The HRA needs to toggle an option in the database called OPMIS (Officer Personnel Management Information System) and then the tuition payments shift over to room and board payments.

Sweet. My DS just started USF yesterday. He has pre-paid in-state tuition, but we could use help with his room and board if he applies as a college programmer for next fall.

I know the PNS for USF. DS will be in very good hands.

One add here.....the room and board requires selection for NROTC scholarship. A non selected CP won't be eligible for Room amd board covered by the Navy.

Captain Long was very helpful trying to get Admissions to allow DS to start in the Fall, but Admissions wouldn't budge. But we appreciated his efforts.

Can a college programmer earn a "side load" scholarship and then use that for room and board?

Something to look into and I don't know the answer as it pertains to the NROTC scholarship, but in some cases if a scholarship is used for room and board as opposed to tuition, it is considered taxable and may need to be claimed. Again, I'm not sure nor am I a tax consultant...just throwing it out there as something to look into.

You're correct. It is considered taxable income when used for room and board, as it is for any scholarship source.
