Background: I was accepted to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University In Daytona Beach, Florida, which is also my number one choice for NROTC. I was also awarded an $88k scholarship. I have yet to hear back from any of my other colleges I listed on my NROTC application.

On the email I received, it says "Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is currently at NROTC capacity for new selects." Below that, it says I may put myself on the wait list.

Should I Contact NROTC and let them know about my acceptance to Embry-Riddle? Also, can anyone please explain how the wait list works.

Thank you.

Each unit has a set number of students they can have on scholarship at one time, at least in the first year. From the email you received, it sounds like ERAU has reached that cap and cannot accept any more new scholarship students at this time. The Navy is not going to care about your additional scholarship. If ERAU is where you want to be, then I'd suggest putting yourself on the wait list and hoping someone who has a scholarship assigned there decides to go elsewhere and opens a spot for you. Someone who has a scholarship there may get a service academy appointment and go that route or may get into another school where admissions decisions have not come out yet. You may also want to contact the NROTC unit at ERAU and speak to them. They may be able to tell you haw many are on their wait list and give an approximation of your chances of getting in off the wait list, based on years past.

I noticed in your other posts there seemed to be a strong desire to go USNA. Is that still your goal? I say that since if you get to go USNA how much will this matter?

USNA is my main goal right now, and I submitted a remedial eye exam to DoDMERB in case a waiver is requested, but I have no clue if that will happen.

Since there is nothing else I can do but wait, I am trying to secure a stable “Plan B” which is NROTC and Reapplying.

Of Course, if any candidate was accepted to USNA, a lot of their problems will be solved.

Thank you for your advice and making things clear. I’m currently trying to get in contact with ERAU’s NRTOC unit.

Just to clarify, I am able to accept the scholarship and send a waitlist form at the same time?

In the end, if it comes down to either ERAU or NROTC at UF, I am most definitely picking UF

There should be instructions for accepting the scholarship and for requesting to be put on the waitlist for ERAU. I can't say exactly how that process works, but there should also be an email address where you can direct questions. This is the first time I've actually heard of an NROTC unit that had reached its cap for scholarship mids.

Update, my remedial was accepted and now I am 3Q’d for USNA. That is so relieving.
Glad to see you got through medical clearance, well done!

USNA typically doesn’t inform applicants if they are fully (“3Q”) qualified. Portal checks signify application elements are in hand. DoDMERB/medical is obvious, as is CFA/physical. The third area of being fully admissible, academic/all other stuff that is evaluated, is usually unknown to the applicant. Nominations, of course, are simply an additional requirement. The SA processes are always subject to change, though, and I know USMA often issues a “3Q” letter. Later in the USNA process, I think we have seen versions of LOAs without conditions that essentially tell the applicant they are fully qualified and to sit tight for an appointment coming their way.

Oh, thank you for correcting this. I’m still new here so excuse me if I get some things wrong.

If I receive the good news, I’ll be sure to add to the appointment list!

Not so much a correction, as a clarification, and you are welcome. You are in good shape and have smartly tended to alternate plans.

Good luck!

A capacity limit of how many national scholarship winners will be allowed to attend specific universities is IMO a positive even if not an extremely recent change. For context, 4 years ago, there were as there are now many Navy ROTC Programs available at many colleges and universities (from NETC: "currently there are 63 Navy ROTC units/consortiums hosted at 77 schools throughout the United States. The Navy ROTC Program is available at over 160 colleges and universities that either host Navy ROTC units or have cross-town enrollment agreements with a host university." ) Years ago, future midshipmen who were awarded the national scholarship all were allowed to use the scholarship at their first choice university But unlike now, in that year around 40 or so of the *very approximate* 1000 national scholarship winners went to one school. It's a lot to intake along with an accompanying very high number of college programmers too on day 1 of NSO. So candidates do pursue the waitlist since other winners may decline/ switch schools but I would not get my heart set that the school itself will be upping their new capacity limits much at all at ERAU, (though changing the capacity limits may vary per school and year, of course). Congrats to the OP on his updates shared and good luck to all candidates.

The individual unit scholarship caps are not set by the individual university. They are set by the Navy (not sure exactly who, NSTC, NETC, etc). I remember finding the formula used to set each unit cap one time. I think it was found in the ROD (Regulation on Officer Development).

Capt Meyers, any advice on getting a deferral from the initial placement school? At what point might it be appropriate to start considering the steps for requesting a placement change?

When you say deferral, do you mean being placed on their waiting list? As for the 2nd choice school, you can request that anytime up to the start of NSI. It's jist that if you wait too long, the school itself may not have open spots even if the NROTC unit does. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, I think so. Early application (non-binding, heard from end of Jan.), deferred to the regular application pool, so expect decision later (March/April). Did get accepted at 3rd-ranked in the NROTC application, which is great. Still waiting on the three others.

Thank you for the reply and for your information over the previous weeks.

Hello Everyone!

I am a mom of DD, who was also just notified she has received the 4-year Navy-ROTC National Scholarship. She wanted Embry-Riddle as well, and was notified it was full. She is now on the waitlist at ER, but the ROTC contact there offered her little hope.

Her Scholarship placed at Purdue, but she was not accepted into Purdue. We are now scrambling a bit. University of Oklahoma notified her that even though she was accepted, all flight slots were full for incoming freshman. This leaves Auburn University and Ohio State on her Top 5 scholarship listing of 5.

Any recommendations for Auburn University Flight Program/NROTC or Ohio State?

DD also notified UC Berkeley and UCLA NROTC contacts - these admissions decisions have not come out yet. These schools would be in-state tuition, so I am assuming she could transfer the scholarship to either if she gets accepted.

This process is exhausting.

Our DS visited with both ERAU and Auburn (and, actually Purdue as well) and Auburn was his top pick - partly due to his experience with the unit staff there and even more so based on his impression of the engineering school. (He plans to study Aerospace Engineering). I can provide more details about our visits if you like, but I strongly encourage her attempting to visit any school that she is considering. We were sure that ERAU was the place for him...but he knew that it was Auburn as we were leaving the campus parking garage. (Likewise, he knew that Illinois - which has a fantastic unit - was just way too big for him...but only because he spent a day there.)

And yes...it is exhausting...but well worth it!😎

I absolutely love Ohio State. I love Columbus. I did not love Ohio State’s flight program. Please confirm if due to budget cuts, there is still no way to get from the main campus to the airport without a car. They canceled the campus bus route. The road you would have to walk is a 40 mph road in parts with no sidewalk. It’s the road then it dips down three feet to lawns and in some areas with woods to get through. In Ohio winters? Eeish. They minimize this issue with comments like “there’s always rides available with other flight students ”. But if you’re nrotc you won’t always be on the same schedules.

You can pay for parking and get a pay parking pass but that’s a lot of ambulating to get your car. Get the car back to the lot. Campus is rather large. Walking 30 minutes and paying for an expensive parking pass which they bragged about how it’s great you can get (purchase) a parking pass as a flight student. No thanks.

Pm me if you want more details on why I’m glad my DS, now a commercial pilot/ flight instructor / soon to be a student naval aviator did not end up at OSUs flight program.

Is she set in professional flight as a major? What then would she major in At Berkeley or Ucla? Navy as a branch only or is she considering army/ af? I ask as there are some great non navy flight programs like u North Dakota but I think they are Army only.

If you have specific questions about Auburn or the other flight programs LMK and I’ll phone a friend.

Hope that all helps.

Herman:

Thank you for the information, this is great. I am trying to PM you. I'll see if I can figure it out.

Yes, she is set on being an Aviation major, which is why she is warm on the UC's - she would be going in as a mechanical engineering major.

Toolman;

This is great, thank you.

Sounds like University of Oklahoma has a similar set up to OSU where the airport is 3 miles off campus and no student shuttle is provided. The public bus system has a stop at the small terminal but takes almost 40 minutes from campus. Taking into account scheduling for other classes on campus, travel to and from the airport for flight labs, makes for incredibly long days. We are on a budget and that does not include my daughter having a car on campus.

I understand Auburn has a student shuttle and is physically closer to the campus through a neighborhood. This is definitely a plus for Auburn. I think DD reservations about Auburn was that the ROTC students are such a minority and that she would not be "in her element" as much as ERAU.

We are visiting Auburn this weekend. It will be on Super Bowl Sunday so the campus will be dead, but we can get the physical feel of the university.
