NROTC Scholarship results?

It sounds like today is a day when many people are hearing they were not selected to receive the National NROTC scholarship out of HS. Very impressed that many of you have already turned the page and are enacting your Plan B with the college programmer route. That's excellent.

I'll just share this, I think of the roughly 1000 students who received the NROTC National Scholarship 2 years ago, already, hundreds have dropped or will drop before starting their 2C year. Those selected for the scholarship are not a guarantee to commission and succeed in this program. NSI drops (more than 100), not being able to complete 2 semesters of Calc and Physics, overall GPA, discipine issues (they do drug test sometimes and that drops yet a few more), GPA, one fight, one drunk and disorderly, etc and poof journeys end. So while those selected feel they have "won" something, their risks of failing to pass the PFT, discipline issues, the journeys ahead for all of you are not easy, I suspect at least a third of the 1000 original scholarship awardees will not make it to commission. I hope I am wrong.

Conversely, I see a much stronger success rate from those who "pick up" in their first 2-3 semesters for a scholarship. Those students are "on it" to prove themselves, and often do. And when they get the opportunity, they make the most of it. People do pick up. So keep pursuing your dream - and come prepared so that in NSO you do great in the PFT, be mentally and physically fit, and pick courses you can excel in as you adjust to college.

I intend this as encouragement for those getting disappointing news today - good luck on your journeys and thanks for your willingness to serve and tenacity to find your path despite today's obstacle.

Advice would be appreciated what happens if a NROTC is disqualified medically through DoDMERB?
Being qualified by DoDMERB is one of the milestones required to activate the scholarship. In the event that you are unable to clear DoDMERB, your scholarship will not be activated and you will be responsible for any incurred fees (Tuition/R&B/Fees). Best of luck!

@kinnem & @Herman_Snerd - thank you very much for your words of wisdom & insight. It’s because of this forum that DS has Plan A- set in stone & is super excited about it - thank you to all who contribute 😊! It wasn’t meant to be this year - this actually gives him the opportunity to change his Engineering focus if he wants & if he picks-up next year, he’s already DoDMERB qualified (yay!). It will all work out in the end for these kids & it sure builds character!

+1 to Herman_Snerd. It takes determined people who are dedicated to being an officer to make it through the program. Of the 45 MIDN freshman who started in DS's unit, only 15 commissioned. Work hard, keep your eyes on the prize.... and have fun with it.

Found out yesterday my daughter got the National ROTC Navy option scholarship....we are SHOCKED and SO EXCITED. Was not sure what kind of chance she had....she was not Tier One or Tier Two, and seeing all of the qualified applicant parents and all their stats kind of made us feel like she wouldn't get it. She was passed for the AFROTC. She will be heading to Texas A&M ....and she is in the Fightin' Texas Aggie band!

I think sometimes people don't realize that if 85% of scholarships are reserved for Tier 1 and Tier 2 . . . then it means that 15% of scholarships are reserved for Tier 3.
Congratulations to your daughter!

DS’ portal notified him today that he was not a recipient of an NROTC scholarship.

However, he has options: AFROTC type 7, USCGA, and USNA. The big reveal will be tomorrow. Can’t wait! Feels like Christmas.

One final note to others is to get those applications in asap and give your counselors/teachers plenty of time. COVID did not help this year, that’s certain. It’s also less added stress. Having a shot to the earlier boards may have helped. Who knows? Others more knowledgeable than I may have more accurate info.
