I accepted an appointment to USNA after accepting my NROTC scholarship a few months ago. I am planning to make a deposit at the university for security, but I am wondering what the advantage is of keeping the NROTC scholarship until I-day. I am going to USNA, so should I decline the scholarship now that I have accepted my appointment?

The advantage is, you never know what can happen. Keep your scholarship until i-day. There is no *downside* so why not do it for the extra insurance.

Paying deposit on the school and holding the NROTC scholarship are the two parts of the “insurance policy.” Quite a few candidates are in your same situation, doing something similar. If you show up at I-Day, your NROTC scholarship will be voided.

DS is in the same boat but his NSI report date (notified this week) is the first group in early June three weeks before IDay so feel somewhat compelled to notify NROTC if his choice as would not want to have a blemish on his record that he failed to report.

Does NROTC get notification or do you still need to reach out and tell them?

There is a downside and that's that there are about 150 alternates waiting for this person to tell NROTC they are going to USNA. What do you think is going to happen? USNA is just going to change their mind about this person? If they get hurt then they can't do either so I don't get why you would hold on to this scholarship when there are lots of people dying to have it when you are most certainly not going to use it anymore.
I am a little biased but I think it is silly to do this. I just don't see a legitimate circumstance where keeping this scholarship could help you.

As long as the candidate is following the rules and accepting the consequences of their actions, they are doing nothing wrong. There’s a surprisingly high attrition rate from when scholarships are granted until commissioning — based on DS’s own experience as a four-year award winner — and the powers that be I trust are managing accordingly. Scholarship winners accepting and then opting for an SA is not a strange circumstance for which the decision-makers are unaware or unprepared. If there was an issue, I trust them to amend the rules.

Why I advised DS to not decline his NROTC scholarship outright at this point, despite his plans to attend USNA. Say he breaks his wrist playing baseball at the end of May. Doctor requires a cast that will be on for 4 weeks. He will be medically DQ'ed on I-Day if he shows up in a cast. He could; however, reach out the battalion staff at his NROTC unit and work with them to reschedule to NSI #3 or perhaps do NSI following his 4th class year. There are not alternative dates or work arounds for plebe summer - if he can't physically participate, he is out. Not a likely scenario, but one that could happen.

It is not necessarily true that if they get hurt, they are omitted from both. If an injury requires a waiver, I believe that waivers can vary between USNA and NROTC.

I've read several posts that strongly encourage that if you have a NROTC scholarship and school as plan B for USNA, that you notify both the school and NROTC that they are back up and that they are OK with that arrangement. Almost all NROTC units and colleges will work with the candidate and have no problems, but some issues have come up. That is why you want to inform everyone so they are all on the same page and agreement.

If DS doesn't show up for NSI, then he will definitely loose the scholarship, but it also is not fair to take a spot at NSI when he has no plans to go to NROTC. He should contact the unit so the date may be pushed back till after I-Day or held, then he has his insurance policy, but doesn't have to go to NSI or take a unused spot.

Done that already. Thanks for the feedback. DS has a Marine Corps scholarship so this doesn’t impact the Navy NROTC applicants.
