Hi!

Why is it that almost all mids from USNA commission with their blue/green marksmanship ribbons while NROTC mids commission only with their NDSM? Do NROTC mids not have the option of getting qualified for the marksmanship ribbon? Can they get qualified later on in the fleet?

NROTC midshipmen can qualify for their Navy Pistol Marksmanship (9MM) rating at NSI (when it's held and for those who attend and have higher scores). Some require unit approval to wear it. fyi, some NROTC midshipmen opt to not wear the marksmanship or for that matter every awarded ribbon like for having a high GPA, community service, intramurals, recruiting, etc.

Some NROTC midshipmen also get marksmanship ribbons on summer cruise.

When we went through NSI, they didn't actually file the paperwork for any midshipmen as far as I know. Even if you shot expert, no ribbon.

@Capt MJ - I would bet you meant to place this in another thread...
I did! I wondered where it went. Thank you.

I was still in the window to delete it, so I tidied it out of this thread and copied it to where I thought I was.

Phew!! I was feeling very dumb. Captain MJ is always so on-point, but I just could not make sense of this non sequitur.

COVID brain. I can’t tell you how many times I have to look at my phone or the family calendar in the kitchen to know what day of the week it is, much less the date.
🤯

DS got qualified on his NROTC Cruise and I believe he wore the ribbon. Of course, once he commissioned as a Marine it didn't mean anything anymore. But he had fun doing it, and was proud he had done it without much firearms experience, and certainly no handgun experience.

Huge difference between the NAVY Marksmanship Medals/Ribbons and the NROTC awards which can only be worn while a cadet. The Marksmanship awards are official Navy awards per the Awards Manual.

Another thing to note regarding Navy awards and NROTC awards - midshipman have to pick one set to wear. If you have your marksmanship ribbon (or are prior enlisted and have other medals/ribbons/badges) and choose to wear it, you aren't allowed to simultaneously wear your NROTC awards, and vice versa. Essentially, you're not allowed to mix and match.

Makes sense....it seems that way across the services, prior enlisted can continue to wear awards earned as enlisted, cadets/mids do not get wear certain awards given as cadet/mid after graduation. At least the Navy allows Officers to wear marksmanship awards, in the Army, Officers do not wear marksmanship awards, even expert.
