As a plebe are you allowed to go off post to get a haircut? A lot of Mids told me at NASS that going off post is a must for haircuts. Anyone have any additional thoughts on this?

I just had this discussion with my Firstie (who got a haircut over break). Plebes (and all mids) have pay docked for hair cuts on the Yard and it’s generally not a problem to walk in and get trimmed. There is one barber that does a “better” job than others and you generally need an appointment for her but not the others. She gets tips.

Might be different for females.

I don’t remember male Mids getting haircuts off the yard. Most females did. Your pay is docked regardless of using these facilities or not. It’s easier to get done on the yard. Paying $20+ for a haircut off the yard is time consuming and costs a lot of $. If you choose to, your deal, but thousands of Mids use the yard services just fine.

As @NavyHoops said. You’ll figure it out.

If you are headed to USNA, you can shift the “off post” term to your joint vocabulary. It’s “off Yard” or “off-base” for sea services.

Not Naval Academy related, but the barber shop permanently closed at CGA over winter break and so now all cadets are forced to go off base for haircuts. We were told that they are looking for a new contractor to take over the barber shop but that could take a while.

My MIDN got all his haircuts on The Yard. His thought was that he was paying for them either way, and it would be silly to pay twice for a haircut.
I did a few of his haircuts when he was at home during the Covid fiasco, however. I received no complaints. :)

I was convinced that the writers for "Coming to America" got the dialogue for their barbershop scenes by sitting in the old 8th wing barbershop. Even down to the fact that the lead barber, Mr. Johnson (his chair was first in line next to the door), would only call Muhammed Ali by his christian name when talking about the hypothetical fights between him and Joe Louis.

As a plebe, I could not imagine wasting what very little liberty time I had on getting a haircut when I could get one all week long right in Bancroft Hall. Never mind spending what little $ we got in our "monthly insult" on outside haircuts when we were already paying for them whether we used them or not.

With only $125/month spending cash as a plebe, your money is much better spent by getting cuts on the Yard. Be like the rest of the plebes, and blow all your money on DoorDash for food during the week. My son said people are out of control ordering out to have it delivered to Gate 1. :p

Off topic but historically a lot of interesting folks working the USNA Barbershop... how many remember Mr. Tracy ? . he had one style, High and Tight. Others were a little more creative, but USNA really wasn't real receptive of "alternative" hair styling back in the day -- I recall certain OOD's put extra scrutiny when inspecting those with hair parted down the middle.

Like OldRetSWO- I can't imagine spending any time or money going out in town to a barber. Haircuts aren't that important to me to start with.

My son only uses the barbershop and has learned to use the cobbler to help fix his shoe and backpack along with the tailor shop. Given that they pay for all these services and their general convenience, it's something he's utilized.

My Plebe uses the haircut services regularly. It seems like one thing USNA has taught him is to look & act 'Professional' :). I have to say, his hair has never looked better since growing back after Plebe Summer. Especially after his and his friends had their "covid" hair in HS... Ugh

I'm with you. I have been cutting my own hair for over 30 years. There is nothing like Wahl clippers and a #1 comb to make short work of haircut day.

I'm not that talented, but we did buy a pair of clippers during the heart of COVID.
I let DW cut my hair for several months --- some interesting results...but it grows back !
Speak for yourself! Mine stopped growing back.

My son got a few cuts when on leave over the last few years. Supporting* a small business and one of his high school friends started working there.

By supporting, I include my money. ;)

Depends on if they are newly dating or not 😂😂

Yes you already pay. But you do still tip.

Like most things, there isn’t one preference fits all. Following rules, of course.
