Hello,
I recently applied to go on a visit to West Point during my spring break this year. I am currently a junior and have already applied for SLE and will be applying for the class of 2024. Because it says “orientation visit”, does that mean it’s only for incoming cadets who have received their appointments? Just wanting to make sure that I’m still allowed to do this even though I haven’t received an appointment.

Also, what do these visits consist of?

The visit is for candidates who have completed enough of their file. Since you have the option to schedule a tour from your portal, you're all good to go. You should absolutely go! You spend around an hour at the Admissions Office, and an admissions officer gives a presentation on some basic admissions info. Then you go on a short tour of the campus. Once you get back to the Admissions Office, you'll be paired with a cadet, and you'll shadow them for the day. You'll go to lunch and go to a class or two. I went last April and I learned so much more than I thought I knew about cadet life. The experience was truly priceless.

Meanwhile, your parents will receive more info from the Admissions Officer. Their presentation won't be long so they may want to grab lunch outside. At 1-ish, you'll return to the Admissions Office, and you and your parents will meet 1-on-1 with an Admissions Officer. This is a really good way to analyze your application strengths and weaknesses.

DEFINITELY go! You won't regret it!

Thank you for the information! I am very much looking forward to going. However, I will only have my candidate questionnaire done while I'm there. Will the admissions officer be much help? Obviously any advice they give will be helpful, just not sure what information they can give me about my application if I've only got the initial portion done.

By the end of your tour, I can almost guarantee that you will have plenty of questions for the Admissions Officer based upon what you may learn from the cadet you shadow.

I believe you can put a PSAT into your CQ as an unofficial score. If you've already taken the ACT and/or SAT, great! Although it is very early, this can help your Admissions Officer gauge how much you might need to up your scores. Also, you might find that the CQ may not fully portray your extracurricular leadership and achievements. I would try to bring some sort of resume and maybe discuss some of your activities with them.

You do not have to have any part of your file completed to go on an 'Orientation Visit.' You don't even have to have a file open.

Definitely go. The experience I had November of my junior year is probably the reason I accepted an appointment last week. You’ll learn more about the academy than you can on any website.

You’ll be able to talk about your profile with the admissions officer. Ask them what you can do better and show initiative in the process. Enjoy your time there, it’s a great day.
