Depends on school and scholarship/grant. DS has a State DVA Tuition and fees scholarship due to my VA Disability rating, he has PELL, VA Chapter 35 (which is a monetary straight to him school only does the certification) and a State education scholarship that pays a per credit hr amount based on SAT/ACT, GPA and Volunteer hours. And when he contracts the school actually gives a credit for the least expensive dorm room. The State DVA is ONLY tuition/fees so that can't be traded out to cover something else. The State grant and Pell pay college expenses which include things not bought at the school right now it is covering the room and part of the meal plan. So when he contracts will choose it cover Room and board so he can keep the high meal plan and whichever room he wants since even the most expensive does not go above the 10k limit especially with the credit from the school. With the ROTC added bonus of monthly pay and book stipend he will be making a great nest egg for graduation. Apply for every scholarship they can find but know the rules on if a scholarship or grant will reduce those things like PELL that are based on total need not just school direct expenses!
