Packing for 1st assignment on a boat

Cash never goes unappreciated by any junior officer. But thinking many light years in the past to my bubblehead days, I would always enjoy getting socks and a pack or two of t-shirts with crew collar. The laundry machines on subs could double as large dough mixers......they just beat the crap out of shirts.

Quick edit here. I think the t-shirts need to be coyote brown and not white. Hope I have that right.

Senior enlisted on a sub is called “Chief of the Boat.” I learned that when I first watched “Crimson Tide” decades ago. Good enough for me. 😉

Navy: “I am deploying on my ship, an aircraft carrier.”
Embarked Marines: “I’m going for a float on the boat. And I am not ship’s company.”

I remember an old salty Bostonian explaining the difference between ships and boats. He said that a ship heels over to the opposite side when it turns and a boat leans over in the same direction of the turn. A double decker tour bus would turn like a ship. A boat would turn like a motorcycle. I thought for a second and said......you're pretty smart. He smiled and said....I'm wicked smaaahhht. It's hard to spell a Boston accent phonetically.

I was up for Sailor of the year on my ship. I was an E3 and sipped up being slightly nervous in the Chiefs mess. CMC was conducting it. He asked me a question about and i said something like "Well, when I arrived on the boat" The salty dude let me know fast it wasn't a boat. ;-)
