Personal Statement Question

Hello all,
I was wondering what to mention and not mention in my essay. Just for context, my sibling is currently in c/o 2019 and my father served 20+ years enlisted in the navy. I know to not rely too much on using them and their background. I still feel it is worth mentioning as they have encouraged me to perform well in high school and given me different perspectives of being in the military. In what manner should I include them in my essay without making it seem like I deserve to get in? ( I don't feel as if I do).

Thank you!!!

Based on what my BGO said... use it to show that you’ll have support, so you will hopefully be successful, that you and your family are committed to service. Your personal statement is an opportunity to brag on yourself and explain why they should pick you, your merits, etc

Start by answering the statement prompt directly. Your family may or may not factor into your statement, depending on the prompt itself. Don’t go into this thinking about how you’re going to — or not going to — mention your family. Tell your best story that addresses the prompt. Make it distinct to you, not some boilerplate stuff that anyone else can write. Be genuine and true, and that should take care of things.

The prompt as I recall asks why interested in USNA/service - ? DS mentioned grandfathers' and dad's service in terms of it sparking his initial interest. (Growing up listening to dad tell sea stories is universally accepted as formative, no? ;) ) For this prompt, I think mentioning your family's military background is completely natural as it informs your perspective on what you are getting into, and why it is suited to you.

Sure Why not? (I seem to be saying that a lot today!) It is your story and your opportunity to tell USNA why you should be offered an appointment. IMHO just make it yours!

Is the essay question the same every year?

Definitely mention it to show you know the Navy life and what to expect. This shows that you are quite serious about the Academy and a future in the Navy.
