Pets on I-Day

Can we bring our family pets to I-Day?
The entire grassy area in front of Bancroft Hall, the Chapel and surrounding classroom buildings containing Stribling Walk is a restricted zone off-limits to joggers and pets, if not authorized service animals. The paved area in front of Bancroft is where the oath ceremony takes place, and the grassy area is where new plebes say final goodbyes to family. Worden Parade Field is also off-limits to pets.

Leashed pets are allowed elsewhere on the Yard, but it will likely be breathlessly hot and humid as only the Mid-Atlantic can be, with a few thousand people wandering around. The brick walks and concrete pavements will be punishingly hot. I love to walk my dogs on the Yard on Hospital Point but would never subject them to a long day in the heat and crowds. Someone would have to stay with them well away from the restricted zone and miss the good stuff.

And - plebes newly dressed in white uniforms will already have had the first fear-of-dirt/lint/animal hair dosage administered.

A long-standing tradition is to put a photo of a loved one in the cap cover. Could be a family pet. Something to make you smile.

Here’s a map of the Yard.

Uther and Ferdinand … our pet goats … are always open to meeting and greeting …. They never turn down a good social.

When my son was inducted there were some dogs there - which I prefer over humans. ;)

They were in the shade panting and unhappy.

So I concur with Capt MJ.

My family got tired of me petting all the mini goldendoodles in Annapolis.

@Capt MJ this might be a dumb question. For PS are they allowed to have a few pictures of family and friends with them for their room?

We sent pictures in the care packages and other friends/family sent pictures in their cards of encouragement over Plebe Summer. They have a cork board area near their desk and can display pictures.

Lol the only pics my son asked me for was of my goldendoodle - when he looked like a sheepdog.

Yes. We maxed out our stamp ounce every letter with pics. Including ones we found of him during plebe summer, doing his thing. And with roomies, etc. He really liked those.

Funny story: during his move to his first base, 4 yrs later, as a new Ensign, his pics somehow met with a dose of bleach. And we’re destroyed. One of the first thing he asked was if I could get them again. Of course I did.

Pics are great. Send them.

To be fair, I have boxers, which are sensitive to hot weather and can overheat. We are dawn walkers in the summer. I’ll get up, throw them in the car, and we’ll head to Hospital Point while it’s still dark, walk along the sea wall and watch the sun come up. So peaceful.

Yard Rat!
Back in the day --we had a Main Office Squirrel. It came in the window and walked around at will. Duty section was responsible for ensuring that it had its daily bran muffin.

Kind of a surprise to me --I don't think I ever thought much about it, but the last I was on the Yard (last fall during Ac Year) I saw what looked like a group of locals with their dogs on the grassy area just in front of Wing 2 , at the corner of Stribling Walk and T-Court, which appeared to be kind of an impromptu doggie therapy session based on the number of Midshipman stopping to pet them between classes. Perhaps it is more formally sanction, but there were at least 5-10 dogs (including a few 'doodles) enjoying the attention.

Gotta agree with the recommendation to leave the dogs at home -- I love my dog, but she doesn't travel. Parents and Plebes have enough to think about on I Day than to worry about the dog. Dog has no idea what is going on, and is only going to be stressed out with all the people and the heat.

Squirrels are vicious monsters … I knew where one mother squirrel was getting in the attic … jumped on me clawing and scratching when I was 20ft up on the ladder closing its entry point …

Vicious monsters … all of them

Hubby, before hubby and in college, rescued a baby one that had fallen from the nest during a storm. Brought it inside. Became a house pet. Named it RoDANT (emphasis on second syllable). Other than droppings not controlled, it was a good experience.

Don’t recommend doing this, BTW 🐿️

There are signs, I think. Cheerfully ignored by humans, as is the way of some.
