I am not on a team sport but would it look better if I joined a sport my Junior year rather than not having any at all? (I'm thinking about joining/trying out for track in the spring.) I'm currently in my Junior year with NHS and JROTC.

Do you want to join the team and contribute or are you just looking to pad your resume? Yes - being on a team is a good thing, but just "joining" to check the box is not.

Track is good varsity sport to join -- you have lots of choices : jumps, various distance runs (short, medium or long distance). Another good one is cross-country. They will help you on your fitness test, not to mention the healthy benefit. Besides, running requires no gears (just a pair of sneakers).

Agreed!! I’m in 4 after school extracurriculars/sports and People always ask how I can keep it up with school and a job. But, the trick is to like what you’re doing. If you’re just checking a box you will hate every second of it and it will make torture for you.

I like how @EEBTTF put it. Yes it will make your resume/package stronger; however, if you choose to participate in a sport, contribute to your team, be committed, and don’t skip practices. Even though track and field is a fairly individual sport, be a team player. Encourage your peers. If you’re looking just to join (as the gentlemen above said) there’s a strong chance you’ll lose motivation to participate and nobody wants that.

Also, keep in mind that the men and women currently on that team don’t want someone who half asses things (perhaps that’s how I view newer teammates). As a junior you will earn their respect by giving 110% every day.

Now if you have the motivation to go out and have fun, hell yeah, full steam ahead! Be the best you can be and good luck!

Run track because you get two benefits. First, you add a sport to your resume, run your Junior year and you can run your Senior year so you have two years of a sport. Secondly, it will make you a better runner and teach you how to train for a run as well as make you run a distance if you pick the right event.

My DS was a rugby player so he was not thin. He joined the track team and told the coach he wanted to run the mile to help him train for the CFA. The coach knew my DS was not going to bring home any trophies, but one more kid running on the road didn't hurt. My DS ran the mile and finished last or second last in every race. It was pretty funny seeing him standing next to all the other tall, skinny runners. But, he got his mile time down to 6:11 in competition, taught him how to train for running, and gave him confidence for long runs since practice sometimes included a 5 to 7 mile run. He ran a 6:08 for the CFA so he was pleased. He was lucky that his teammates were totally behind him though. It would have been easy to leave him in the dust, but they were great teammates and gave him tips, ran with him at times and just overall supported his efforts.

This is one of the reasons the academies like team sports participation. You learn that teammates support one another and the impact that the support can have. Makes you a better teammate, leader and follower.

I'm actually looking to join to contribute. I really enjoy running and stuff like that.

Running is awesome! Trust me you'll love XC and Track & field oh and don't worry if you're good you'll get there. I've done both for four years and only made varsity the last two ( my coach swears I made varsity for track my sophomore year though)and captain for one. Make sure you do your research in track though. I love the 800 and mile as events however I really only enjoy the 4x800 and the mile. Plus if you want to get into a varsity spot but everyone is too good ( my case) then school always need high jumpers and triple jumps. I earn against doing this unless you enjoy both running and this as it'll not only wear you out physically but also mentally with doing something you don't love.
