Pilot Qualified

For my DODMERB eye exam I was found to be slightly nearsighted, but apparently it's not bad enough "to need glasses." Six months prior to this I went to the eye doctor for a regular exam and was 20/20. Is it likely that I am not pilot qualified? Will my ALO know if I am?

I only care for the possibility that it could increase my chances of an appointment, I am not really interested in flying.

Thanks!

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that the dodmerb physical is a pass-fail thing. My vision isn't good enough to be a pilot, but I still got a "Qualified" medical status. I wouldn't worry about it.

I believe vision for PQ just has to be CORRECTABLE to 20/20... if you are right in that range, you should be fine.

Well my status is "Qualified," but I recently read in 2 (?) threads that the academy makes a standard that 55% (changes yearly) of incoming cadets need to be pilot qualified, so it could have weight on admission.

First off Roman, I want to party with you!!! Stargate is an awesome tv series. I was so mad when they stopped SG-1 and now they are stopping Atlantis as well.

Anyway I am in the same boat as you being slightly near sighted. The Academies have programs that you can go through to get your eyesight corrected. Just remember this, something my ALO told me, "DON'T LET ANYONE TOUCH YOUR EYES!!!!!" This was stressed to me on several occasions and still holds true. I will not let anyone touch my eyes. If anything was to happen to them, lasik or anything else I believe, then you lose you medical qualification status. I'm not an expert, so you would have to ask Mr. Mullen over on the DODMERB portion of this forum.

So, don't let anyone touch your eyes and if you and I get appointments to the Air Force Academy, we soooo need to set up a Stargate Marathon.:eek::shake::shake::thumb::cool:

Don't worry, I'll watch it for you guys then let you know all about it while your in BCT. lol ;) I'm surprised icelander hasn't mentioned my avatar..... Silly kids.

Don't be too concerned about your PQ status now unless you have a big defect like cataracts, color deficiency, or macular degeneration. Most everyone can become PQ through PQ if you're bad enough, or like me (my eyes are right outside the PQ range for an astigmatism) you should be able to attain a waiver during the med exams here.

Wait, so the answer to his question about how those with perfect eyesight having a higher chance of getting admitted- is that true?

I do not believe that perfect vision gives you any more of a chance getting an appointment than anyone else. Your medical is a pass/fail. And remember; only about half the class go towards a future in flying. Plus; as Hornet mentioned; you only need to be CORRECTABLE to 20/20. I.e. The academy will give you PRK eye surgery if you later on become pilot qualified and your vision falls inside of a certain area. later... mike....

hornetguy- while we've got a topic on it..

this past semester, all the 3 digs were comin back from their eye exams sayin how badly they flunked the depth perception test. i know we had a topic over on cc, but what kinda waivers can be given out at the academy, ie if you dont qualify for PRK?

The 3 digs were probably complaining about it because that portion of the test seems more difficult than the rest (it messed with me a little, and my depth perception wasn't flagged AFAIK).

(They're 3 digs. Complaining is what they do.)

um im definetly in on the stargate marathon. i was gonna mention something to you earlier hornet but i got sidetracked i think. and if the stargates weren't directly related to the USAF, then Galactica would be the best show. unfortunately, they are also ending that.....

The current BSG is the same era as the old show.

no the new bsg takes place about 40 years after the origional show. same time as the miniseries tho. i'm pretty sure adama was a viper pilot in the 1st war. thanks for the links tho. too bad we won't be able to watch the new stuff for a while
