For incoming Mids, are placement exams taken during Plebe summer or are they taken on-line before reporting for I-Day? I recall a link to placement exams, but didn’t see a reference in the PTR. Thanks.

One of the letters has info on how to log into the ABS (Academic Background System). There are a few questionnaires and Math assessments that need to be completed online before arriving. You can't miss it. The back of the letter has "Academic Background System (ABS)" in bold on top.

Do as many validation tests as you can. Even if you don’t think you’re worthy, do it. You might surprise yourself. And you’ll get a much-needed respite from heat, humidity and forward-leaning rest. You can always decide afterward how many and which courses to actually validate.

I completely agree with @MidCakePa. ! My advice to DS (22) was to go easy on validation and not burry himself with hard classes Plebe year - dang was I wrong and thankful he did NOT head my advice.

He validated so many classes his counselor is now seriously looking at him starting his Master work Senior year in Nuke Eng.

Our DD did the same thing at USAFA (19) and her senior last semester has been fun in that she was able to take a senior leadership roll with reduced class load.

Easy to start higher level classes first year. NOT AT ALL, But definitely survivable with all the amazing help at the Acadamy, They want success and show it with lots of fenomenal resources they offer to help get through - especially year 1.

The USNA link reflects validation tests for Calculus 1,2,3; Chemistry 1,2; Physics 1,2; English 1, 2; and various foreign languages. Is there information available as the content / scope of the tests?

The ABS has questionnaires and math exams. Chem/physics/English/foreign lang on the ABS are just questionnaires and the real validation exams are taken during Plebe Summer. The only way to validate Math with an validation exam is on the ABS. No math exams during plebe summer. Also, AP scores trump validation test scores.

So if I were to fail the AP test but validate on ABS, would I validate the class or would the AP test cancel it?

Don’t overthink this. Guidance is very clear: Pass the validation exam during Plebe Summer and you’re good to go. Read the website carefully for any updates or exceptions. But again, don’t overthink it.
