So I dont truly understand how the West Point prep college works. Ive been on the website. I read through it etc. Its been raised as a possibilty for my son not a guarantee and Im still unclear. Do the kids then repeat these classes in their first year at West Point? Is an extra year of service requirement added? Is this frowned upon by the true cadets? Are the kids made to feel inadequate or less worthy? How is acceptance to the SA almost guaranteed the following year? My kid has a MOC nom. Thank you for helping me to better understand.
I think most things have been touched upon.
1. As pointed out, many reasons for the board to recommend MAPS. In some cases if an issue comes up at R-Day a person
may even be offered a slot at MAPS, perhaps someone injured just prior to R-Day who needs to do some rehab.
2. MAPS is not "near" West Point, it is on West Point, about a mile from the other cadets, just next to the golf course/ski slope.
3. At MAPS you have more freedom than a normal cadet. You can have a car, wear "cadet casual". The idea is not to make you a West Point cadet, but to prepare you to "march down the hill" on R-Day.
4. For NCAA purposes it is considered a high school for eligibility.
5. No extra commitment. You can leave MAPS at any point. The only commitment is for soldiers with an obligation left who quit and go back to the ranks. If your son goes to MAPS, but then does not go to West Point he will still be considered a "veteran". Cadet Candidates actually get the National Defense Service Medal.
6. Cadet Candidates do not really mingle with Cadets, except perhaps during church services (if they attend), at the PX, or if the CC elects to attend a function such as a football game so no real "looking down at them". I think some plebes whine because of the privileges CC's get, but there has to be something to whine about.
7. Once you "march down the hill" no one cares if you went to MAPS. If anything it helps as you already know people during Beast.
8. As others wrote, if you don't screw up you are pretty much assured getting into the SA.
