Plebe summer 2025

For plebe parents, especially the now empty nesters 🙋‍♀️ get a hobby, find a project, take a class. I knew there would be a void when he left, we are very close and it was going to be rough. I signed up for classes, redid several rooms in the house, put in a new section of the garden, flew to Texas to play with my best friend. Upgraded my Audible account and have seriously put a dent in the amount of reading I wanted to do.

Stay busy. Stay positive. Your kid will be fine. USNA hasn't lost a plebe yet, that I know of 🤷‍♀️. I got lucky and mine wrote letters, but that might be because he started in ROM, then ended up in ISO six days into PS sooooo he had time on his hands.

I guess the less you try to figure out the details ahead of time the less stress you will have going into it, either as a plebe or a parent. Besides, anything you learned and were expecting, WILL CHANGE. It's just how it works. Thus the term 'semper gumby'--- but after 2020, I would say 'uber semper gumby' might be more appropriate.

Yep going to need some new hobbies. Mine is #3 and we will be empty nesters! Going to be tough on us but it’s also a new chapter which is exciting too!!!

I recall the wonder and newfound appreciation on one of our sponsor mid’s face as he saw his mom return to a pre-kid hobby, nature photography. She upgraded her camera to the digital era, took classes, won some contests, started creating greeting cards with her images, and got a tidy little business going selling her beautiful images in local stores and galleries. They live near a resort area. She’s gone on to win photography prizes at national levels and goes on photo safaris for travel when she can. Mid started seeing his mom as an adult with gifts. She took priceless photos of him and his buds on spots all over the Yard. She said her day job as mom was done, and she was only consulting now.

When in doubt….rescue a puppy!

Wellll, my mid's IDay a lot of time was spent looking for one particular plebe, while getting ready for the march into Bancroft. Never did find her, not sure who lost whom!! Detailers were sweating and the plebes looked nervous!

Another note, however Plebe Summer has looked in previous years there will be a few significant changes this year. I don’t know what those will be, but I do know that this year’s officer in charge is a USMC Colonel who has previously served as a company commander at one of the Marine Corps Recruit Depots, and the rumor is he thought Plebe Summer has historically not been disciplined enough.

While we are spreading rumors.... I heard through the grapevine that the new 'Dant has been recruiting members of the Class of '85 (that's 1985 for those too young to remember!), which was the last Class to have and give a Plebe Summer, to come back as Plebe Detailers. I can already anticipate the emotions when they cue the "White Christmas " soundtrack as '25 forms up at the end of Parent's Weekend. ;)

Commandants are thoughtfully and intentionally chosen. Stellar career and admiral/general potential is a given.

USNA is like a pendulum that swings between a college that gives a commission and a military school that awards a degree. Attention is paid to diversity of all kinds, including warfare community.

Moderate oscillation in the sweet middle spot of the swing is usually the goal, and Dants (and Supes) are brought in, often to make adjustments to the swing, if there is a consensus the swing has gone too far in one direction. I recall being on the OPNAV staff and being in the CNO’s office one day, and seeing 8-10 “packages,” folders with career summaries on officers being proposed for the role, and catching bits and pieces of the conversations, concerns and involvement of various 3 and 4 stars, grads and non-grads, as the stack was winnowed. After all, the eventual consumers of the USNA product are the Fleet and Corps. There is no shortage of opinions on “what the Naval Academy needs.” Just ask the Brigade, alumni, Fleet and Corps leaders, parents and Bill the Goat.

I think news of every incoming Marine Dant or DepDant starts a rumor mill churn relating to tightening up and pushing the pendulum back to the military school side.

😂 Love this, and totally stealing it! 😂
In addition to new hobbies, projects, classes, etc., you can also launch a whole new career for yourself. I've been in school the past year and am now doing what I really want to do as a career. As your young adults continue their education, be an example by continuing yours! It is literally never too late. I know many people just want to retire, but I know I'd get bored real fast!

DS is a second set SL and has indicated training sessions will be happening for all scheduled for Plebe Summer blocks. It’s fair to say 2025 will have a different PS than 2024, through no fault of their own. So....2025 be prepared and train well, and remember to soak in the beautiful sunrises!

Bring it on! :)

Anyone think a change to I-Day and plebe summer might be coming in the next week or couple weeks with the new masks guidelines at the Academy? Ex. only 1 I-Day, parents on I-Day, no rom, normal plebe summer, any changes?

Probably depends on # of P2Bs vaccinated (re: ROM), and further guidance/public health orders from the CDC and State of Maryland. It's looking closer to "normal", but I'd be skeptical if someone said it was going to be like pre-Covid.

My guess is that plebes will be tested upon entry and then "offered" the vaccine at I-day, and then will have a two week room, followed by another test, then two weeks of "semi-normal" plebe summer, then the second dose and finish with more "semi-normal" plebe summer activities. I would be surprised if they have the parents there for PPW - but perhaps they might restrict it like Commissioning to a small number of tickets/plebe family. Who knows - if you told me in February that they didn't have to wear masks in May I would say you are crazy!
