Plebe summer 2027

Does anyone know if they still do chow calls before every meal year 'round? I'd heard from someone who graduated several years ago that they were done but not with the frequency of the old days. I did so many that I could still do one today, sad to say.
Just for giggles, my class has a major reunion this year and there will be one meal where we'll have a couple of classmates (former Supe and a former Dant) do the chowcall.

Just checked out some track smoker pics.

Looks like the plebes have camel backs, instead of canteens, for hydration. That’s pretty cool!

Yes. When we went on the Yard to drop the dude off for his Block 3, we saw a whole mess of Plebes, and they all had them. Son was lamenting that they didn't get the joys of canteens slapping against their back/butt. 🤣

Cliff Claven moment: It’s a little known fact that at one time, CamelBak’s largest customer was the U.S. Army. Don’t know if that’s still the case. 😉

I'm not sure if this suggested to Plebes, but the recent letter addressed solely to me was written on the backside of a used range target. She wrote that she qualified with rifle and will get to wear a ribbon. I believe that's below the highest level, but I'm still proud. I took her to the range on occasion growing up.

Her recent letters have been much more upbeat lately. I think I may actually sleep some tonight.

... first two letters from PS were written on a glorified toilet paper with the right upper quadrant bitten by a rat... in all of its majestic grandeus calligraphy.

The shooting ribbons are plain for qualified, with an S for Sharpshooter, or E for Expert.

Congrats to your daughter!

I did not take my kid to the range at all. I simply ran out of time before PS. So he had never shot before. But I did give him a quick rundown of my AR and Sig P226 so he would at least know what they felt like, how to load, and site, etc. He did end up qualifying with both rifle and pistol (barely).

They do a good job teaching them during the summer, so it goes to show that even a zero experience kid will learn how to properly shoot!

So with the smoker events, will there be a boxing smoker soon? What other smoker events are there? How do plebes get selected to participate in the smoker?

One of my Mids was a weapons detailer. And it can also be challenging to ‘unteach’ bad techniques/habits, or retrain in the Navy way. It’s not a bad thing, to not have prior experience shooting.

It is like with learning golf. Start with a clean slate, get instruction first. Otherwise you will be lunging at the golf ball for the rest of your life...;)
