I know that Parents Weekend is the first time you can have family visit, as well as going home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I was wondering if there were any other points throughout the year where family or perhaps a s/o could visit? If I attend USMMA I would be playing a fall sport and so if I understand correctly, my split for sea year means no Thanksgiving or Christmas break 3rd and 2nd class year.

As long as you don’t have watch or sports or anything crazy, pretty much any long weekend (or regular weekend for that matter I guess) is fair game. You just have to request special liberty. It’s usually approved but just be mindful that things are always subject to change, and you only get a few a trimester. I think it’s two per tri and someone can correct me if I’m wrong. Spring break is also a thing

You get a trimester break around Halloween. If you are a fall athlete you'll be on season and depends on what team and what they do. Usually football plays Coast Guard coming back from that break. The general rule now with the new split system (3 vs 2) is that you go out to sea immediately following your sport. Spring athletes technically go out first as they end the year with the sport and go out pretty soon after graduation. Fall athletes go out 2nd and winter 3rd. And yes your holiday's as a fall athlete will probably be over the holidays.

Are plebes typically granted special liberty or not until recognition? Also if it’s approved have you known anyone to leave over long weekends or is that not practical? Thanks so much

Yes plebes can get special lib! You just have to do the paperwork, communicate with your chain of command, and be flexible with your plans. Usually plebes only get 10-18 lib on Sundays if they’re lucky, but on parents weekend and certain holidays overnight liberty can be granted but you might not know for sure until day before/day of.

Special liberty for plebes depends on what company you are in and the leadership of that company. The decision to grant special liberty can be inconsistent and seemingly arbitrary. Often, the decision is not made in a timely manner. In addition, it may depend on the performance of your plebes class as a whole, so that all liberty can be cancelled depending on whether or not performance standards are being met.

There is also the little known Sponsor Program. That program provides the opportunity to enjoy what is called dinner liberty with a local family. Rules are stringent to be a sponsor.

Even without the Sponsor Program, I think plebes still have the opportunity for dinner liberty. In my day, as a plebe this was liberty once a week from about 1600 to 1900. Upperclassmen could go out on multiple occasions during the week. We were fortunate to have a pizza place within walking distance named Maurice’s. Something like $3 would get a slice or two and a beer. $5 likely a pitcher. Maurice’s daughter had married a KP grad so The place was very hospitable to Cadets.

Dinner liberty is very few and far between for plebes. I think I got dinner liberty once the entirety of first tri and my paperwork wasn’t approved until maybe 4 hours prior.

Definitely witnessing the inconsistency of leadership with respect to liberty and other privilege for the plebes. Everything from lib to recognition seems to be a moving target. Special lib is often incentivized by attending certain events…aka if you go support XYZ team you will get liberty afterwards. Some battalions have a notoriously strict officer and live under an Iron Curtain while others have a more relaxed atmosphere. Despite it being such a small school that disparities in experience from plebe to plebe will be dramatic depending on sports involvement, company, seas split, professors etc.

Leave seems to be pretty consistent if it is published. Sports can impact leave though…example from this year. The fantastic women’s soccer team kept winning… they had another game set during fall break and I know there were many plebe parents that were happy when they finally lost and could go home for the first time since Indoc. KP leave schedule doesn’t reflect traditional schools…
