I'm a bit confused on this form, is it a background check or do we just need to get the two questions answered with a signature? I can get a criminal background check by paying for it but I do not know if it will be accepted since it is not the form WP gave.

I believe you just have to get it signed off, I would go to a police station or court. I am from California and I had to go to a court, from there they pulled up my records put a stamp and signature on the paper and I was good. Double check in the "Instructions for Applicants" packet, but I had it all signed on the form from West Point.

Did you have to call ahead and make an appointment or did you just walk in?

For me I called and they said to go to the Sherriff's office records, and I had to pay with a money order because that's all they would take. Definitely call before going and bring ID.

Who did you call? and did you only need to fill out 1 police record check? I though you had to get one from each jurisdiction (city, county and state)?

I called my sheriff's office and they transferred me to records. I emailed West Point, and they told me I simply needed only one records check from where I currently live, so I just sent the one from my Sheriff's office and they gave me the green light. While at the Sheriff's office I told them my situation and asked who I go to get a record check from my police department, the records tech told me there's no need because the check from the sheriff's office is for the entire county I live in, which covers my city. Hope this helps.

Question for you.. what court did you go to? I live in Los Angeles and I am having a hard time getting the form filled out.

Do you live within a police department jurisdiction or a county sheriff? Our son did not deal with a court. Just the local law enforcement. The challenge was letting them know this was a very superficial “we don’t have dealings with you” query as opposed to the deep dive they assumed it required.
Once we passed that hurdle it was fast and easy with a self addressed stamped envelope to the SA requiring the form.

I live in Los Angeles so can go either city police or county sherrif’s station.

This causes confusion every year, for both appointees and police departments. A good friend of mine did background checks for the secret service. This police record check is simply a precursor to any background check done at the federal level. It is not a background check in any way. It can be filled out by any local, county, state level police department. And only one of those departments is needed. It's just to get the ball rolling. It is very simple, and they should be pleased to do it for you. I can't imagine why they would charge for it.

Riverside covered my jurisdictions, but you'll probably have to go to the LA courts. If you're under 18 currently I'd call to see if you have to go through a juvenille court.

In our case - mid sized city - my daughter had to go to the Sherriff’s Office website and schedule an appointment with the records area. The county jail is housed in the same building so definitely no walk-ins and several security measures were in place.

They were definitely pleased to do it - even paying a compliment to her and telling her how exciting it was that she’d been appointed to an academy...but they did charge $8, payable in cash or money order only. Probably standard operating procedure...plenty of other places may not charge but I’d imagine our city will take the revenue wherever they can get it 😆🤷🏻‍♀️
