Have any of the BGOs on this forum commented on this situation? I would be interested to see what they have to say.
I understand that he wouldn't be wait listed if he were 3Q, but I was confused by what the OP said that was part of the explanation offered by Admissions.
"After May 1st, we will know more about where the actual class size as students accept/decline their offer. The principal noms without an Offer are on our waitlist in the event that space opens up. This includes both USNA and NAPS."
Why did it even mention NAPS? How does that play into the whole situation?

Aren't the Congressional nominations supposed to be submitted by Jan 31st? You would think that as of Feb 1st or there about, USNA would know exactly how many Principle Noms they would need to fill. When reviewing the following thread does that mean that everyone that received an appointment after aprox Feb 1st had Principle Noms or am I misunderstanding how the system works?..How could they not anticipate the number of Principals they would get? My guess is it would basically be the same every year give or take a few for new MOCS that may do something different than their predecessor. It sounds like they are passing the buck a day not owning up to a big mistake.
It's just a guess on my part but I suspect if they end up unable to offer these folks a direct appointment, they might offer them NAPS instead as a less than optimal solution to the problem. Again, I emphasize I am only guessing.
I have not seen any BGO comment on this situation. I think all the BGOs who hang out here are terrific, but I also think it would perhaps be unwise for them to comment. If this situation is as it's been reported, then USNA will want to handle it, and any communication about it, at very high levels. Again, all just guesswork on my part but that's certainly how I would handle it.
He wouldn't be wait-listed if he wasn't 3Q. He also wouldn't be wait listed if he were otherwise normally eligible for NAPS (because he wouldn't be 3Q in that case). USNA screwed up. I'm also sure they're hoping to correct it once they know who had declined. I'm confident there are people who will decline to attend other fine institutions like Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford, and University of South Carolina.

While the University of South Carolina might be a good school, I don't think I have ever seen it in the same sentence as Harvard,MIT,Yale and Stanford. I am sure it was added for sentimental reasons. Just trying to break up the last 2 stressful days of waiting. Go Gamecocks!
I was wondering if anyone would catch my weak attempt at some humor here.

Still rooting for you gavigane14! Hoping you are there July 1st. Does anyone know if this has ever happened before?
Last year at this time there is a post of a candidate was not given an appointment after 2 years as the principal nominee. He/She was 3Q ed and put on wait last both years. I don't think it is a new thing which leads me to believe it's lawful.
hopefull for all
Wow. Really? Can you tell me which thread please?
Thanks terrifiedmommy---I guess it's time for the myth to die that: principal nominations + 3qed = appointment.
-I too thought it was true! Here's hoping those folks find themselves off the wait list and on their way to the academy July 1!
I would have to go back and find it. I will when I have more time. Just go back to April 13. I actually read it before this all became an issue this year. I was trolling trying to see how late in the game people heard about appointments last year.

Well, I found it. You're right, it looks like it's happened in the past, but not necessarily to this year's degree.

I have been following this thread, and have been variously confused, frustrated and upset on behalf of the waitlisted principal-nom candidates. I, too, thought that the principal nomination plus 3Q was a guarantee. I did an internet search to see what, if anything, USNA says about it, and I tripped over this:

(Dig down, there is a LOT of information here)
Also found the main page here: http://www.usna.edu/AboutAIS/
The part that I am wondering about now has to do with the "vacancy" dimension. If the MOC already has 5 MIDNs charged to his/her office, does that render the principal nomination moot?
