Hey y’all, I have a question about principal nominations. I recently received news that I got a principal nomination. Everything on my portal is complete, even medical and the nomination. I’ve heard that as long as you are medically qualified a principal nomination guarantees appointment. So I was just wondering when I should hear back with an LOA or appointment…

Appointment. 3Q plus principal nom is an offer of appointment.

An LOA is a letter of assurance that if you meet conditions, you are assured an appointment.

So should I expect to get that soon? The nomination just got put in this morning…
Also thanks for the clarification :)

I can’t answer timing. I suspect it will be sooner rather than later - if you in fact are 3Q and did receive the principal nom.

Congrats.

If you’re 3Q with a principal nom, then you’ll indeed receive offer of appointment. You may or may not get an LOA. It’s not a prerequisite for receiving an offer. The fact that you don’t get an LOA doesn't affect your offer — again, if you’re 3Q with a principal nom. As @A1Janitor says, your actual official offer may arrive sooner rather than later. Bit no one here knows the timing.

The principal nom method forces USAFA to give an appointment to that nominee, no matter how USAFA ranks them against others on the slate, as long as they are minimally fully qualified.

If a candidate is not fully qualified, they could have 5 noms but no appointment.

Fully qualified: medical /DoDMERB Q or waiver; physical/CFA; academic-scholastic, everything else USAFA evaluates.

LOA: most cadets and midshipmen at SAs did not have one. Not a required item on the journey to an appointment. Nice to have.

Appointment arrival time: If you are fully qualified, anytime between now and mid-April. It all depends on how USAFA is working thousands of statuses, hundreds of slates, and resolving final decisions. There are intersecting and parallel processes in Admissions that occur before an appointment is released. All applications are not yet in.

I hope you are fully qualified - with a principal nom, you will be locked in for an appointment! Let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later.

My son got a principal nomination last year. He got his appointment offer about two weeks later, just before Christmas. You should hear soon. Congratulations!

My son had two principal nominations and had everything complete/fully qualified and didn't get the official appointment until late March...so it definitely varies.

Congrats either way!
