Q & A - Norwich University

Comfort Inn in Barre 10 or 12 miles is good hotel. Ask for Norwich discount. There’s a Hilton in Montpillier with a $$ steakhouse on 1st floor.

Thank you! We stayed at the Comfort Inn at Barre twice now with the Norwich discount. Very comfortable and close to NU. And the fresh baked cookies are a nice touch too! We might stay at the Hilton next time to get into downtown a bit and explore. Thanks so much!

Congratulations on your son's acceptance. I'm currently a sophomore and am also from the DC area. Will he be playing a sport?

All good recs here on Family Weekend and Thanksgiving! The Hilton in Montpelier is in a great spot and there are lots of cute restaurants in the downtown area there. There was a lot of flood damage last summer that took many of those places out but there was a lot of progress even by Family Weekend in Oct so I’m sure everything will be great by next summer/fall!

As my freshman year comes to a close, and through the immense amount of help I've received through almost now 3 years... I thought I may be able to put that back forward into the community, and if anyone were to possibly have any sort of questions; about Rookdom, what 1st Semester may look like, or even something as simple as debating about choosing Norwich as your SMC of choice, I can help out, without giving too much information away of course ;)

I remember when I used to count down the days, and it's ridiculous to think, theres 137 days till the next cycle of Rook Arrival; August 20, 2023.

Trust me when I say, it sounds cliche, but those days will go by FAST
I got accepted this past October and plan on going, I toured campus twice, and am really only curious about how rookdom is in terms of PT , Rook life and rumors about hazing, and exercise, I'm not morbidly out of shape but am just curious about how PT and training in that aspect. My only worry really is running

If you are trying to pursue a commission in Navy or Air Force do your homework on requirements and pathways to contracting.
Many students show up on campus with the intention to contract into AFROTC or NROTC but soon find out that may not be possible.
There's a reason the AROTC battalion grows expotentially and the USMC PLC OSO gets real busy in the spring of rook year and fall of sophomore year.

My kid is going to be home for spring break so I can get him to answer your question. He was a rook this year so it’s all fresh in his mind :) I know from his phone calls there was running… he ran a fair amount leading up to rook arrival and did tons of push ups/sit ups. I do know they now do planks instead of sit ups so practice those. I’ll post an answer next week when he’s home.

My son is cadre and the PT mentor for a Rook company. There is no hazing. School will not tolerate hazing. There is yelling and mind games during Rookdom. It is deigned to teach about handling stress effectively. By Rook recognition you will understand how it helped you grow, so don’t let it get to you the first few weeks.

There is running. And Norwich is hilly. You should be doing a PT plan over the summer to arrive ready. Life will be happier if you arrive in shape and can just keep up with the group runs. Otherwise the PT mentor will have to try to get you in shape to pass a PT test once you arrive. If you want to contract military you need to pass PT tests. If not, it isn’t such a big deal. As PT mentor, my son had a 100% pass rate. But expect some group runs and group PT.

You will make life long best friends with your Rook brothers and sisters. Norwich is tight, warm and accepting. First few weeks of Rookdom can be tough, so you form a group “we’re in this together” mentality and want everyone to do well. Which makes close friendships that last all four years and onward. You’ll be so proud to wear that big Norwich ring as an upperclassman.

If you have any concerns during Rookdom, remember the Cadre are a lot of bark and little bite. They were exactly where you are 2 or 3 years ago and remember it well. One on one your cadre are good listeners and empathetic. That’s why they were chosen.

Just circling back after talking to DS, he seconds everything said by Wildflower222! No hazing, cadre care a ton about each one of them and although rookdom was tough at times they have had a ton of fun.

He said PT was tough at the start for him but he improved quickly with lots of reps.

I hope you have a great experience! It’s been amazing for our son so far and we’re all looking forward to the rest of the journey.

He’s done cross country his senior year but not much else, but he’s mentioned being interested in trying out once he arrives.

Any intel on how the new Norwich leadership is shaping up?

Son has all 3 ROTC Scholarships available plus the Norwich Presidential Scholarship for use; Norwich is still very much in his wheelhouse, but he’s waiting on 3 SAs & Ivy Decision Day before he makes his final selection.

there hasn't been much. they did do a town hall on Zoom for students and families the other week to talk about it, and I appreciated the effort to stay in touch with parents about it. I missed it due to work but the general consensus was that it wasn't a ton of new information.

This FB group for Norwich parents might be a good resource to check out- look for "Norwich University Families - Classes of 25, 26, 27, 28 (unofficial)"

There is a new Norwich Class of 2028 page that popped up the other day but there is some concern that it was started by someone who is more of a spammer/not a true parent, so if you join that proceed w/caution!

Thanks!

Son was up there in Feb ‘23 for LCW and thoroughly enjoyed it.

A close friend & USNA company mate was the PNS at the time so my son was able to get a real good feeling for the NROTC Unit. We actually sat with Dr. & Mrs. Anarumo at my buddy’s retirement luncheon at USNA prior to the shakeup.

Son has a difficult decision ahead of him, which is exactly where we wanted him to be at this stage of his life!

Hi!! Quick question. How does the iPad situation work. Do we buy one there or do we have to bring ours from home. Also, who is allowed during family weekend. My family can't go, but my friend will be going to a school nearby and she wants to go for me.
How do fall sports work. I plan to do women's rugby and want to bring my equipment. Do I leave it home and wait until after rook week?

I’ll try to answer your questions, but hope others will chime in too! Last year my son got his iPad (Norwich provided it and it was preloaded with the apps) on Rook Arrival day when he picked up his other general issue gear. We bought him a keyboard and protective case to go with it. Someone in the family Facebook group knew which generation of iPad they gave out so we could get the right accessories ahead of time.

Family weekend is wide open to all that want to go as far as I know. We had a very nice time and highly recommend it for all.

Sports, from what I know, you can bring your gear on Rook Arrival day. Also, everyone said last year to send the kids with a shoebox full of snacks for Rook week (healthy). Bringing that was key!

Good luck and have fun preparing!

All great info from @Milarmymarinelady! For family weekend, there are specific report times when you are allowed to depart campus and when you need to return, but you don't need a parent or anyone to officially check you out or anything. You will have to remain in uniform if you are in public within 50miles of campus.

Our daughter brought all of her gear including sports stuff on Rook Arrival Day.

We set up our daughter with an Amazon account and a Walmart account so she could order stuff as needed, in addition to sending her with the shoebox of snacks.

I just announced a retired 3 star USMC Alum.
