Question about CFA

I know that the CFA is a pass/fail basis, but I don't have a varsity sport so I may have to get a higher score than just passing to show USMA I have the physical capabilities. I know that playing a varsity sport is a huge part of the application because it shows teamwork, dedication and leadership, but I think being very involved in JROTC and Marching Band can show that sufficiently. With that and passing the CFA put together, I believe that has the same effect of playing a varsity sport.

With that being said, if I demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and dedication through JROTC and Marching Band, and show I can handle physical fitness by passing the CFA, will I still be at a significant disadvantage for not having played a varsity sport?

This is sort of an apple-to-oranges comparison. CFA measures fitness, not athletic ability. There are many fit people who aren't athletic, and there are varsity athletes are aren't necessarily fit.

What JROTC extra curricular activities do you participate in? At many schools, Drill Team, Raiders, Marksmanship, and Orienteering award varsity letters. It has been a while since I looked at the application, but I think all those are now listed as options. Raiders did not use to be, but I think it was added a few years ago.

Staff (battalion xo), drill (commander), Raiders, Archery, tutoring (commander)

I am trying to get drill and raiders varsity status this upcoming year with the staff, hopefully it works.

It is not a significant disadvantage, but you will need to emphasize the activities and work you are putting in through your essays and interviews. Also consider the CFA as a beginning to your commitment to being fit. I advise students to run at least 10 miles per week, typically 3 miles at a time. Your workout routine should include a focus on overall fitness. Also, if you can find the time, engaging in another sport through a club, such as ultimate frisbee, racquetball, martial arts or others, will also help with your preparations and application. Good luck with your pursuit of an appointment!

Thank you!

Your duties in JROTC will carry a good amount of weight, particularly any leadership positions you have. It is important to note that the vast majority of accepted candidates participated in a varsity sport and most received a varsity letter, based on the statistics. One potential advantage you may have is if your unit is an honor unit with distinction, your Senior Instructor can submit the forms for a JROTC nomination and you should automatically receive that as one nomination opportunity.
