Questions for a Freshman Cadet

I was told this by a firstie in the econ department:

There are 3 things possible to do here with your time. At MOST you can only accomplish 2 of them.

1.) Get good grades.
2.) Get enough sleep.
3.) Have fun.

Cryosk8trboi: Instructions to Appointees will be sent to you and it answers most of those questions.

I like this :thumb: Get good grades & Have fun FTW. Who needs sleep?

Sleeping is my form of fun...does that mean I can accomplish all 3?

The problem occurs when you realize (right after taking a GR) that you can only choose one of the three.

I asked this on another thread, but can I have a smartphone (iPhone, Android, etc) as a doolie? What's the general consensus on phones? I know it depends on squadron when you'll get them back after basic but that's pretty much it...

phones

Yes, having an iphone or droid is alright. The only problem is that freshman cadets aren't allowed media priveleges until after recognition, so it is on your honor that you don't use your phone to listen to music or watch shows/movies. But as for just having the phone to make calls, text, etc. it is perfectly fine.

Yeah, that's about right.

A skill that is valuable to learn quickly: the ability to decide when going to sleep will help you more than studying.

because it made me laugh...

slightly more on topic: do you guys have to shine your shoes, or are you allowed to have the kind you don't have to shine?

You have to shine your low quarters using nothing but regular polish. No parade gloss or paint. You get to wear corframs (the ones you don't shine) after Recognition. They don't even issue corframs till almost a week before Recognition.

I was looking at the list of clubs, and I noticed there aren't any frats listed. Does the AFA just not have any frats?

What's the armed forces bank envelope inside the BFE for?// Should I open it now...?

If I remember right, it contains required forms to set up your checking account and direct deposit with them. Everyone has to set up with them, but after basic you can switch banks to wherever you want, which I did myself (to USAA). So yes open it.

If Christcorp or flieger can maybe address this...we keep these bank accounts for the remainder of our military career, correct?

not if you dont want to. you can switch to any bank you want after basic

You can use any bank you want. USAA and armed forces bank are two of the biggies. Many people use armed forces bank initially; mainly because they have a branch office right there at the academy. Some keep this bank for their entire career. Many however will change banks later on to USAA. If you decide to get the 0.5% interest $35,000 loan that is offered to cadets, that is offered through USAA and you'd have to open an account with them. They aren't right there on the academy, but they are local in colorado springs. Many people keep this bank. USAA is also much larger in their services. I.e. Car insurance, investments, etc... "Look both of them up in a google search".

But you can use any bank that you prefer. But the air force and academy require that you have "Direct Deposit", so you must have a bank. Armed forces bank is the easiest initially. Especially if you're young and new to having a bank account, debit card, etc... They are right there to help you. Do I recommend them? Yes. Again; only for convenience. That's who my son started with. Plus; there's an Armed Forces Bank here at home at the air force base. So; if we wanted to add some money to my son's bank account, we could do it without sending him money. But now that he's a junior, and decided to take the $35,000 loan, (To invest), he opened an account with USAA. He changed his direct deposit to them. He'll probably cancel his account with Armed Forces Bank eventually; but there's nothing to say you can't have more than one bank account. I have 3.

And yes, you can keep a bank forever. When I came into the air force, there really wasn't USAA or Armed Forces Bank nearby. But USAA has been around for a very long time. Then again; we got paid with paychecks initially too. But when I got stationed at Kirtland AFB in albuquerque, I opened up a bank account with Sandia Area Federal Credit Union. My military pay, and NOW My Retired pay, has been going there for more than 30 years. So yes, many people keep their banks forever. But that's only if you like them. "We love our bank.... Yes we do.... We love our bank...." LOL!!! Sorry; that's a stupid commercial. Anyway; there's no law. You can change banks any time you want; or have as many banks as you want.

But I do suggest for the noob at the academy; start with armed forces bank. They are local for the cadets on base, and are very convenient. Once there, and a year or two later, you'll know if you want to change to USAA; keep them both; or get a totally different bank.

hello all,

Just wondering what I should bring to BCT as my instructions to appointees booklet was a little vague.

Do I need to/am I allowed to bring a watch? It should most likely be a military style one right?

Sunglasses, Colorado is really sunny, are we supplied sunglasses or should I look into getting some Oakley M frames?

Should I bring my Leatherman?

Should I bring my own Headlamp?

thanks!

They aren't right there on the academy, but they are local in colorado springs.

It is an office building with NO banking facilities or services. The only "walk-in" bank with services for USAA is their San Antonio office. So, USAA is not local at all! But with internet banking there is no need. They reimburse up to $10 a month in ATM fees anyway, so you can get cash at the AFB ATM on campus.
