Questions for a Freshman Cadet

On phone:

My son got his phone back just for weekends right after A-Day. Then after prog (end of Sept) he got it fulltime. I think those on AcPro still have limited phone privileges after prog. Then they took it again one week before recognition and gave it back right after recognition.

On course credits:

My son got credits for the two semesters of chem. He got it because he did two semesters of college chem with lab in a university (he did early college program during HS). And he did a summer research project with a chemistry prof although I'm not sure if this counts. For those with college credits, it may be possible to get credits for courses as long as you got 'A's (or 'B's ?)on them. BTW, he was still required to take the placement tests on chem and calc. He also got credits on calc, physics, bio, english and comp sci.

My son's was similar although I don't think he got the phone on weekends at all until after Parents' Weekend then fulltime after progs. However, he didn't have his taken at Recognition until right before it started - he was on the phone with us while all the 4/c were huddled in one room waiting around 4pm that Thursday.

My son had had a year of regular chem, a year of AP Chem (with a 5 on the exam) and two semesters of Organic Chem at the local college (A first semester and B second semester) and was only able to still validate one semester at USAFA and took 110S first semester. That may have been though because he was not able to fit the lab portion of the classes in when he took it at the college.

Question..
During BCT wake-ups, how much time are cadets given before they are expected in the hallway? Will they have time to use the bathroom or possibly brush their teeth? Or do they pretty much only have time to tie their boots.

You'll have a lot less time than you want and think you need. Yes, you will be expected to shave (male) and brush your teeth, and yes, there will be an opportunity to use the restroom.

Prep ahead, as much as possible, and be thankful that you no longer have to starch and iron BDUs.

On that note, won't the Uniform of the Day be blues for the majority of the week? If so, how OCD will the upper classman be about them being starched, ironed, and perfect in every other conceivable way?

--This is in reference to the regular school year, not BCT. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I know what to expect as far as BCT goes in this regard : P

No. Blues is only UOD on Monday. The rest of the week is ABUs.

During the school, will the upperclassmen be OCD regarding uniform standards?
Some of the cadets on training staff will be, but not the majority. Still though, you should want to look crisp and professional.

this question may have been asked a million times:

do freshman get/have to go to away football games at service academies and or ‘regular schools.'

Our cadet is a member of the Drum & Bugle corps and they traveled to San Diego, Las Vegas, West Point, (& NYC), Dallas, & Shreveport for away games last year; (maybe even somewhere else). They were treated well and seemed to have a wonderful time. This year they will travel to the Navy game and will possibly have some time to spend in DC, can't remember where the other away games are with the exception of Albuquerque to play UMN. We're excited about the UNM game as we live in Albuquerque! D&B can be hard work but has its bennies as you can see.

My son is in D&B as well - also went to Oklahoma and Wyoming last year and this year will go to Notre Dame!

As far as BCT, you won't be issued the blues (or at least won't wear them) until after you return from Jacks so only for the last few days of it as well.

You will be measured for many different uniforms and will receive them later. The blues shirts we were issued the first few days and we were all measured for pants that we were given after Jacks. We were all measured for parade dress, but didn't receive it until a few months ago.

Later,

Brian

...and if you arnt “d&b” ?

Sorry this never got answered so I'll take my best stab at it. My understanding for the most part is that 4/c aren't able to travel to the away football games unless they're part of a group going like D&B, cheerleaders, etc. That doesn't mean you'll never be able to go to any - I know some cadets traveled to the Army game last year and got permission to go since they were from the area. Similarly, I'll bet the same will be true this year for ND or Navy. But it wouldn't be a whole lot different than the odds of getting a pass for another weekend if your parents came to visit or whatever - you'd have to send up a SSS (request form) and if everything was good (no restrictions/probations), it would probably get approved. Once. Not for every away game and based on circumstances (ie all the 4/c in your squadron are in trouble for some reason - which happens a lot), it might not get approved for the one you want. But no, not all cadets travel to all the away games and it's harder to do as a 4/c than any other class.

My daughter got to go Maryland for the Navy game two years ago. She was a 4C at the time and playing on the women's rugby club. The USAFA rugby teams (mens and womens) played games against the Navy teams over that weekend. But again -- that was only because she on a team/club that got to go. Otherwise as a 4C, she would not have been able to go.

Bible, picture

can you have a bible or picture during BCT?
