Questions for a Freshman Cadet

Treat yourself to one of those "green" bags at the grocery store for $1 and take that to I-Day. You won't need more than that!

Do you feel significantly fitter after life at USAFA?
I know it's a weird question, but I'm just wondering how significant the athletic environment and the elevation imposes on the body.

I recently took the AF PT test in CA (April). My upper body was still in good shape (better since I have time to go to the gym). At USAFA I rarely ran and just the hike to classes and stairs was enough to keep my 1.5 mile in the 10s min range. I biffed the run on the test for lack of running and walking. USAFA kept my heart and lungs in wonderful shape. I'm in good strength shape now, but not endurance.

From long ago....

Hey I know this post is two years old but I actually took the time to read all the post from beginning to end and this was one of the most helpful threads. Its a ton of post with great information from Beast to classes during your fist year. Hope it helps!

Question regarding Thanksgiving break

First of all let me thank you for this informational forum. What a blessing to have so many of you volunteer your time to help so many of us understand the many concerns and questions we have. My son will be part of the class of 2017 and be assigned a sponsor family. My question is will he be allowed to go to friends of our family who live 70 miles from the academy over Thanksgiving break or will he have to go with his sponser family?.

Shouldn't be a problem. Most of the cadets fly home and therefore are provided bus services to and from the airport at a cost. If your family, friend or sponsor family is willing to pick him up and bring him back before the end of break, he'll be fine.

It has been over a year since Jezzie posted...AND in 14 (Zeamer!) months she will be graduating!

I am glad this thread is back-in-business. There is a lot of knowledge here.
As I was reviewing...I realized Jezzie's tag line is tattooed on my son's scapula!
The quote is just another way of saying "never give up". Great advice for any incoming doolie or current cadet

My question-for-a-freshman:....Do they know each other.....??

Thank you!

Just finished reading this entire thread... and I have to say, I have not been more excited to attend since... well actually this whole time I have been but the point remains! This was an excellent read.

I don't know about females, but the males are issued 2 pairs of the low quality, uncomfortable pajamas. They appeared to be constructed of a textured paper product. I asked DS if anyone ever wears them. He said "Yes . . . during hall brawls". Once he was recognized, he requested a pair of comfortable pajamas be sent to him.

Females get the same ones as males, at least as of the class of 2015. They are practically see through though, so I always just wore PT gear under them and when we closed our door to go to bed, I would take them off and just sleep in PT gear (shorts and a T-shirt)

ACTUALLY...she was disenrolled for academic deficiencies the summer after 4-deg year. We were freshman squadmates. She decided to enlist, and is currently doing well as an enlisted AWACS controller. Get good grades, people!

FL Placement Tests

Good to know! Thanks

On a separate note, can anyone give me an estimate of how long the Foreign Language Placement Tests (online, prior-to-arriving ones) take? Or is it totally different for everyone??

Thanks in advance

Note for those unsure of what language they want to take: in the information about you section of the online pre-tests, they ask for your language preferences!! Aaaaahhhh!

Just as everyone else has been saying, this has been an amazing thread. I have spent all day today reading all 32 pages and I have never been more excited for applying next march. Thanks to everyone that has posted and given advice here.

Thanks to the Q/A!
Tyler

Flu shots aren't given until the fall. The cadets will all get flu shots in season, very important to have.

It will be interesting to come back in a few months (well... half a dozen +) and reopen this thread. But this time as the C4C...
