Questions Thread

Has anybody's portal gone up yet because it says June 15th but mine has yet to come up. Any ideas?

My portal's up. However, MAJ Belmont said this is an exception. MOST should be open by now. Check back by the end of the week.

I'm thinking about bringing my ukulele to beast. I know we're allowed to bring 1 musical instrument to bring with us. Anyone advise against it?

Mine is not up yet. However on another thread it said around June 15th. So, I would think that some time next week it will be available to all candidates.

My portal is not open yet either. They said that they are using a new database system or something for the MALO's and Field Force. I'm just waiting for it to open. If it doesn't by next week this time then I am going to email the Tech person.

You will be so busy lugging stuff around, changing bags, etc., so why not just give your parents bring/or ship it up on A day. Then you wont have to carry it around or worry about it getting damaged.

Just a thought......

Just my two cents, but I would definitely advise against it. A class of '11 guy brought his elecric guitar with him and was henceforth known as New Cadet Rockstar. A musical instrument will definitely attract attention of the wrong kind; plus, you really won't have time to play it until after Beast.

I know that new cadets will be issued underwear, but may we bring our own as well?

I know this has been brought up before, but I was wondering if there were any tricks to getting stains out of the boots. My boots are nice and comfy now, but they've picked up some grime from a hike I did last week and I havent been able to get it all out

hahaha I can definitely see that happening

My son brought a couple pair of compression shorts with him on R-Day, but aside from those, I don't think anything other that what is issued is permitted. It could depend on company rules also. I'd recommend bringing just a few pair of compression shorts. My son's first letter home he requested more compression shorts and we mailed them directly to his PO Box.

We didn't get the expensive brand ... just went to Target and got what they had on sale.

I realize this may blow some minds...

You do not NEED compression shorts. I've read more sturm & drang over those stupid shorts on this forum in the past 6 months. Every morning, hundreds of thousands of US Army soldiers perform all manner of physical activity without compression shorts. It's really not that bad. I've never worn a pair for PT. Ever. It looks incredibly unprofessional to have compression shorts poking out from under your uniform (despite the reg allowing for it).

Pack what you're authorized. Wear what you're issued. Countless cadets before you have done it. We're all just fine.

I do apologize if I've provided incorrect information. This is the suggestion my son received last year, on these very forums, prior to attending Beast. Would he have survived without them? ... absolutely. His company allowed it, so he wore them.

This year on the New Candidate Packing list straight from USMA it is recommended that you bring compression shorts, so I would think that would mean that they are authorized.

My son was thankful he had them last year.

For USMA, when are Cadets allowed to go to Airborne School, Air Assault School, etc? I know in Texas A&M it's during the summer of their 2nd and 3rd year, so i'm wondering if it's the same for USMA or just every summer?

@cisco
Most cadets go to either Air Assault or Airborne in the second summer between their Plebe (Freshman) and Yearling (Sophomore) years at the academy. Additionally, there will be more opportunities in the other summers to try out for slots to the more advanced military schools such as SFAS, SERE, SAPPER, and Pathfinder just to name a few.

Pathfinder is a risky one. It's a VERY easy course to fail out of. We had a cadet in my pathfinder class. Boloed out on the second exam. That's a long ride back to WP with no torch. He wasn't alone, though. Out of 63 who started class, 22 graduated.

As for compression shorts...yes, they are authorized. But, if your son or daughter has played sports for years (which they likely have) and has never found an overwhelming need for compression shorts to this point, then they are not a must-have item by any means. They can be good for certain events. Some people like to wear them on ruck marches to prevent chaffing caused by underwear. A great trick that the vast majority of soldiers/officers use to achieve the same end is to not wear underwear.

My point is to worry less about the shorts. People seem to get really wrapped around the axle about whether they have the right kind, etc. They're not a big deal.

Scout, just going to bump this as I don't know if you saw it. If you had any tips on getting stains out, it would be awesome. Thanks!

Laundry detergent and some oxi-clean. If that doesn't do it...oh well. They're boots. There's a reason we don't shine them anymore. :thumb:

How long is SFAS and what do Cadets normally do there? Same with SERE
