R-Day Packing Questions

Good afternoon everyone!

I am running through and purchasing everything on the pack list for R-day, but had a couple questions that could use clarifying.

The pack list for 2020 has soap, razors, etc as "optional." I assume then that male Cadet Candidates be issued all necessary toiletry items (soap, razors, oral hygiene items, etc)?

I usually use an electric razor here at home. Is it recommended that I bring it?

Any brand recommendations for compression shorts that do not have visible logos on the legs?

I have a Leatherman that I would like to bring. I'm flying solo out to NY, and not checking any bags. Any idea how I can get it out to me?

I'm sure I'll have a couple more before it's all said and done. I'd appreciate any insight those wiser and more experienced than I might have.

  • Bring your electric razor.
  • Compression shorts at Target have logo that melts off w/ iron. Also, some can be colored over w/ sharpie. (brand on waist band is fine; just not on leg.
  • Mail the leatherman to your PO box at WP after you get that info. You don't need it right away. Cadre will allow this package...be sure it's a small box or envelope so it goes into your po box.

Hmmm. Interesting question. Last year the cadets brought soap/toiletries with them to beast. I didn't notice that the list this year noted these items as optional. Now I am curious as well.

I'll check what brand of compression shorts I got my son and let you know. He loves them and prefers them to this other underwear. I bought them at Sams Club (they had the best price that I found).

Bring toiletries for a month at least, good practice to get into for future military service. I still have a roll of TP in a plastic locking bag in the pocket of my rucksack for when I camp with the Boy Scouts...

I checked - I got my son Champion brand compression shorts. I tried to find a pic on the internet, but had no success. Like I said, Sam's Club had them. The logo is only on the waistband and they are very comfortable (so my son says).

Adidas has a 2 pack solid black compression shorts for about 10 or 15 dollars a pack, which is very cheap for compression shorts. I have used those and they have been great. Don't worry about the logos on waistbands either. You can't see them.

Thank you all for your quick replies! Just bought some Adidas compression shorts from Penney's for pretty cheap. They should work well. I'll keep asking around to find out what toiletries should be packed and let you all know what I find out.

With the knife---blade less than 4"---I have a leather man that I think works, does the entire thing need to be less than 4" or just the blade itself?

My DS is in the 2020 class. Should he get trail shoes or running shoes?

You won't need your leatherman. They don't really use it until the summer before Yearling year. I mailed my son's after Christmas in one of his boodles.

Okay so I should leave it at home and have my parents bring it or send it to me after CBT? Would it be a problem if I brought it?

Your leatherman is not necessary. A head lamp would every valuable by freeing up a hand to set up things.

Push Hard, Press Forward

Also bear in mind that you will have a few opportunities to go to the Cadet Store during Beast to grab things like toiletries and whatnot.

As a prepster, I was wondering if I would be allowed to wear ACUs during beast or will cadre enforce uniformity?

Go to a good running store (i.e Fleet Feet or something similar) and get fit w/ good running shoes. NOT trail shoes...running shoes that can handle the pavement and provide the kind of support for her type of feet/running style.
