Random CIET Questions

Yes to your first assumption. He wears contacts 75% of the time, the other times it is the glasses. I have seen in the CIET Cadet Command pictures those that are wearing glasses are black but are they army issued or does one just have to make sure they glasses are AR 670? I'm assuming the latter. Last question for a complete newbie, does one wear their prescription glasses or contacts at CIET is there some sort of requirement that if one needs corrective eye-wear during this type of training one wears glasses? Thanks Thompson and good luck to Hackenberg and the Jets.
I do not know of the requirement regarding glasses/contacts. This wasn't even ever brought up for us. I'd say, as long as they conform to 670-1, he should be fine.

From a personal standpoint, I'm near-sighted so I'm forced to wear glasses. However, I do wear contacts. BUT, my personal recommendation is to wear glasses - at least for the portion when they're in the field. When you're in the field - you're gonna be pretty dirty most of the time. Do you really want to be infecting your contacts? Plus what if you lose one of your contacts/it rips? Then what?

Leave them at home/in the barracks and take glasses out in the field. To me, it's not worth the hassle.

Lol - could care less about football. I don't even follow it or understand it. But thanks.

If I remember correctly, last year they were told they could not wear contacts at CIET. And if one was to sneak and wear them, do NOT wear them in the gas chamber!

... you know, I vaguely remember hearing a story (unconfirmed) of a cadet doing so ... into the chamber.

I think the contacts melted to the eyes (or something to that effect) ...

Last year when I went we were not issued BCGs at fort knox. I just went out and bought a black/grey pair of sturdy glasses and wore those all of the time. I brought a few pairs of contacts with me but only wore them on the few holidays we had off and then our week of outprocessing. Like was said above, do not wear them in the gas chamber, and honestly wear them sparingly. You will be in the field and dirty and tired and sticking your grubby fingers in your eye is the last thing you need.

As for gear, bring what it says on the packing list, but you will all still go to CIF and draw more gear from them and most likely use that instead of what you brought. It is dumb but that is how it is. I recommend you bring about 3 pairs of pt shirts and shorts though. We spent an uncomfortable amount of time in them. Sweating all day and then being expected to sleep in them got a little old. Also, bring a fitted bottom sheet, they didn't issue linens at CIF last year and the bottom sheet came in clutch in the barracks.

Also to address any potential questions about "what will we do there?", the schedule for both CLC and CIET is linked below.

My son is a 3 year winner so not contracted yet. Originally told he was going. Then told number of slots cut and he wasn't going. A couple weeks ago he got an email saying they now had a slot for him and he was going. Two hours later he got one saying never mind it was a miscommunication, he isn't going SOOOOO, we think he isn't going

On a different note, I had a laugh today. My DS' cadre asked for his "fax number" so they could send over info related to CIET. I guess they never heard of scanning documents. So, instead, they have to fax it to my office, I'll scan and email to my DS.

DS said he has run across dial up internet in some of the offices he has been in.

Thanks for all the info on eyewear. I learned that AR670 means Army Regulation #670. I assumed the number had something to do with the compression strength of the lens material. Ha! Over thinking this.

DS was given all info but it is trickling to me in exasperated grunts and incomplete collections of paper packets. Why are there 6 copies of one page?!! ...and no information I need to know!?

There's a giant pile of miscellaneous camo items on the dining room floor so I guess this thing is happening. My goodness. People actually carry around a backpack that big? It's stuffed. I started unstuffing it but I thought there may be some mysterious method to the madness. I'll have my Navy boy teach me the order of things and put it back in order. Army DS seems a little put out with my mothering.

He still has a month to produce the missing information. I am making an eye appointment to get some BCGs. I'll let him find out when he gets there that his cool frames would have been acceptable. Mom's revenge. He should have been more forthcoming with information.

My daughter's packing list actually said contacts are not allowed and that she should bring two pair of glasses.

On another note, are cadets allowed to o bring/use cell phones during CIET?

Cell phone is determined by their cadre. DS had use of his the entire time if I remember correctly.

DS had use of his when they were in barracks. Charging was often an issue as there were limited outlets in the room.

My DS is going to CIET with the first regiment this year. Just wondering how many parents go to graduation vs. not. I have tentatively booked tickets but wondered if many attend.

Unless you have burning desire to be in Kentucky I would save the money. Use that money for his commissioning uniforms. We did not go last year and will not go this year for CLC.

We did not go to the graduation last year. It was live streamed so I watched that. Pretty anti-climatic. Plus it was held indoors due to the weather.

Well 5 directives later, DS has been advised "definitely now going to CIET." I told him those are his "final orders" until they are changed. He will be gone before other earlier cadets return so will not have their input or suggestions. Found a supply list on earlier thread, but it was not clear if CIET or CLC/CIET. Passed it along to him anyway. Curious to see any suggestions, recommendations from either past attendees or families. Thanks as usual.

I was stunned at how few parents there were. While your kid may say that they don't care, they do. Kids looked disappointed at the ones who had parents show up for them. I felt bad for all of the cadets that didn't have parents. We wouldn't have missed it. We already had a trip planned to Hawaii that flew us back during Family Day (so we couldn't make that), got off of the plane after an overnight flight and drove 9 hours straight to Kentucky. Checked in at 2AM...woke up at 6AM...at the field by 8AM for graduation at 9AM, left by 1030AM, left Kentucky by 1130AM to make the 9 hour drive straight back home. What they did is important, therefore, it was important to us.

We were able to attend both family and graduation. For family day I think it was worth it. There were about 150 + cadets that were waiting for their families when we went. Before this adventure we heard "no, don't go" , and "I'll be fine" Well every cadet we saw were thrilled to see their family and DS was happy to spend 8 hours talking up a storm. I agree with graduation being somewhat anti-climatic. The one bit of advice I would give is to tell your cadet to stay in uniform after graduation if you want pics. They changed right after graduation and were told to change. Well our DS is now following directions and couldn't wait a few minutes :) Still he was very happy to see us. This is a tough call for many. If you can do it great, make it a mini-vacation. Family day and to yes graduation were worth the time to support not only our cadet but the others as well.
