I received the status update yesterday stating that I will not be appointed with the class of 2025. Obviously I’m disappointed but life goes on. I had a question on the reapplication process from college. As a college student are you competing against the others in your district or is it a completely separate pool of candidates. The reason I ask is I can either go to a big city school which will obviously have a higher amount of applicants or I could go to an in state school which will cost less and probably be located in a less competitive district.

Depends on the nomination you get. ROTC candidates compete within the pool of ROTC candidates. If you are re-nominated by a Senator or any other MOC, you will be competing on their slate. Don't worry about the other people, make yourself as competitive as you can! Reflect on why you did not get appointed this year and evaluate what you need to change. Good Luck!

You are still competing for nominations and appointments from your district (your permanent address). I would advise staying in the state school for a lower cost. The district would still be your current one even if you go out of State...but I would still advise staying in the state school! (That is just my parent and pocket book advise...And that is what Dave Ramsey would tell you to do!)

Do not choose your college based on where you think it’ll be easier to get a MOC nom.

For starters, college students are still official residents of where they came from, so your current district would apply next year. Second, it’s not a given that the “new” district will be easier for you. It only takes one candidate with better credentials to make it a competitive district for you.

Third, if you don’t get into an SA next time around, will you be happy staying at that school or will you transfer? Fourth, you’ll perform better and increase your application credentials if you’re happy and thriving at school, so look carefully.

There’s much more to this than “gaming” the application process.

If you are over 18, you can establish residence at the location of your college and compete for a nomination in that district. You can also choose to retain your original home of record and compete for a nomination there. You cannot do both.

Choosing based on which district will be less competitive can be a risk business. Sometimes the choice is obvious, but usually you will not have enough information to make an informed decision.

One important factor is convenience - will you have to travel cross country to get to an interview or drive an hour.

Sorry to hear this USMA_Hopeful, my son got the same update a few days ago. He said he is going to apply again too. Don't worry about the nominations but pick the school where you will be happiest! Our MOC had zero noms for USMA this year, DS did get one senatorial and had a service connected nom b/c of JROTC but that still did not lead to an appointment. Look into ROTC at both schools as well. If the long term goal is to be an officer, there are other ways to get there! Good luck to you!

I’m in the same boat but didn’t receive any noms this year although my interview went amazingly.

I agree with most of the thread. Stay local and take a strong course load of the 4 cores along with first year Army ROTC for total of 15 hours both fall and spring semesters. Where you go is not as important as the strength of the next iteration of challenging course work. Reach out to your FF Rep and have a frank conversation of what held you back compared against your peers. Even if you 3Qd with a weak file, one or two years of college (although still adding decent points to a WCS) may not make you that competitive against the top tier of your competition - so have the frank conversation and better understand if reapplying is worth it. Also try to stay active with one or two quality extracurriculars or volunteering efforts that follow on from high school. Take at least 6 hours this summer - a math and a communications/English type courses. Ask your FF Rep for reapply guidance if they have any.
