My DS is re-applying to USNA. Is it recommended to keep the same BGO or request a new one? I thought I had seen something written about this in a previous thread but I can't find it.

There is no official guidance given to Area Coordinators or BGO's. I think the comment you refer to is up in the Reapplication sticky, suggesting that you have a different BGO because that gives Admissions a second opinion. I don't know where that came from , or whether it really matters. It is not the BGO that is going to get you in, or keep you out.

To be honest ...the Candidate really doesn't get to make the choice...the Candidate may request another BGO, but ultimately it is the Area Coordinator that would make the change. If you decide to make the request , be tactful in how you approach it, perhaps asking the original BGO if it would be better to have a fresh perspective.

During the recent BGO training in Annapolis (July 2023), the subject of BGO reassignment came up. Admissions personnel said that it is normal to reassign a BGO for a re-applicant. So I would anticipate that will likely occur given availability of BGOs in the Area. It provides a "fresh look" at the candidate.

In my area, it is standard practice to auto-assign a different BGO for reapplicants.
It has been that way for many years

I recommend that my students ask for a reassignment. Some candidates prefer to stay with the same one, which may be the best route for that particular student. As noted, you will have to identify the 'assigned' BGO first and then make a decision to request a change or not. Best of luck!

Don't Give Up was kind enough to point out that the new BGO handbook, updated and released just a few weeks ago includes the statement that a Reapplicant "shall " have a new BGO. I stand corrected , and promise I wlll read the new Handbook soon!
The new handbook definitely has some changes and shifts in guidance and practices for BGOs. The training emphasized that.

The admissions team did a great job 👏 on the handbook, reads better than prior.

And can I also say hanging out with @don’tgiveuptheship was cool. He is a methodical and thoughtful thinker, which I greatly appreciate. His life experience will serve his candidates well. And we got to exchange stories of our kids. Which is always our favorite part.

DD was assigned to her original BGO this summer, and after talking with her, BGO#1 recommended that DD contact admissions about getting assigned to someone new for that second opinion/fresh perspective angle. She also said that she has always had her reapplicants assigned to someone new for the second attempt. DD is still waiting for that new assignment but we hope it will come in the next week or so!

I would follow BGO #1's advice, however, be aware that BGO assignments are provided by the Area Coordinator(s), not Admissions. If you get no traction, you can reach out to the AC as listed on the Admissions website.
