Reapplying to USNA (after a turndown)

Army?

Has he applied for the Army ROTC scholarship there?

Is he dead-set on Navy or open to Army now that he's doing ROTC there?

Darn. That's tough, I'm sorry. Hate to hear that.

On the parents Facebook, I see quite a few from KY, with the latest one joining yesterday.
6 congressional districts , 2 senators. Looking bleak for him…this second cycle.

He will do rotc scholarship next year ….and yes he’s getting pressured to join national guard. I will advise him to reapply if need be, but don’t know how he will react going forward. He may just go guard and get through college. Time will tell

I'm not knocking the National Guard, but he really needs to think that through before he signs with them. It's not the same as active duty Army.

Yeah I know…I’m against it 🤣. Which is why this cycle is so important. Hope he can land at NAPS if not the academy.

If not he will make his transcript reflect the rest of his grades by next cycle, and then am sure he will be introduced to yet another reason in the tea leaves that he falls short.

Summer seminar was really inspirational to him. Hopefully that week and his commitment can carry him on forward

I know people (from Kentucky in fact) who were sold a bill of goods and now regret it. I'm not implying it's a bad service, but if you are looking for active duty Army, the National Guard is not the same.

It's not very common for re-applicants to get NAPS.

Unfortunately spring semester grades don't have any impact on this current cycle. It's admirable for him to keep trying and applying. USNA is full of re-applicants. My only unsolicited advice is no more Cs as they really are re-application killers.

Yeah that experience seems to solidify USNA for a lot of people. It's a great week and the spark that lights for kids is important to tend, especially for the re-applicants.

Good luck to you!

Best of luck! DS received his LOA yesterday. Perseverance pays off! Go Navy!
Congratulations!! We are from WV too and my DS is a direct applicant. We haven’t heard anything yet. In case he doesn’t get in, did your DS do ROTC in college? What did he do to help him application compared to last year? Thanks for the help and way to go with the perseverance!

I hope for the best, but I'm currently planning for the worst

From what I've seen, the best things to do as a college re-applicant are

1. A's in Plebe years courses
2. Strengthen Leadership Involvement

Anything else I'm missing?

I assume joining an NROTC program would help? I plan on attending A&M Galveston as a back-up and they have a very solid NROTC program

That is the best advice. It's important to remember that with directs, test scores carry a lot of weight in the application. However, with re-applicants, it's grades and GPA. The best advice for a re-applicant is to get lots of As, an occasional B, and no Cs.

If your civilian school has NROTC, definitely join. If you join as a college programer, you position yourself for a side load scholarship and are one year closer to a commission. Secondly, if you do re-apply for USNA, you have another nomination source.

Best of luck!

I just got my turn down status for USNA. I am going to do ROTC in college and reapply for C/O 2029. Any advice on reapplying, or when will my portal reset for me to reapply?
This spring you should:
-finish the semester with A's and A-'s
-take the ACT and SAT as many times as possible, aiming to hit 750/35 on math

This summer you should:
-get a job
-volunteer on your days off
-get in great shape for the CFA

This fall you should:
-Take >17 credits with the most plebe-like schedule possible, emphasis on Chem/Calc/English
-Improve on the CFA in every single event
-be the top ranked freshman cadet at your ROTC batallion
-Join clubs or a sports team, seek leadership positions
-End the semester with a 4.0
-Write an essay that demonstrates maturty, growth, and ability to thrive, not survive, at USNA

I was successful at accomplishing most of what I just described above. It was enough to get me in on my 2nd try, although I'm from a realtively non-competitive part of MA.
