Good morning all! I will be starting Army ROTC in the fall and have been told that the boots that are provided aren't great and that I should purchase my own. I am looking for recommendations any guidance you can provide is appreciated.

I have the Garmont T8 Bifida boots and love them. I've put a lot of miles into them rucking recently and can say that they hold up really well, are easy to clean, and very easy to break-in.

Everyone's feet are different, it just depends on what you are comfortable with. I have tried Garmonts, Danners, and Bates, but I went with boots made by Oakley. Also, try and buy some inserts because it helps your feet with rucking long distances.

Ditto to the above - everyone has a personal preference, but you are right to say that the issued boots are not the greatest. Nikes are my preference--very lightweight and good for rucking, etc. I have also heard good things about the Garmonts--a little bit heavier but also more durable.

Reach out to current cadets at the unit you will be attending. They'll be able to give you a good idea of exactly how often you will be using your boots and what you'll be using them for, which will help you decide what kind of boots to get.

ADDING A QUESTION TO THIS THREAD:
Incoming NROTC freshman in the fall...
Any recommendations/brands that are best for women?
Thanks for this post - I hadn't even thought of this!

NROTC issues boots, and there's no reason to buy ones now as units have different rules regarding what boots are approved.

While boots will be provided, my mid learned from some 'others' in both her unit and during summer training, there are better boots out there to use for all that running, etc. and you can keep your issued boots looking sharp.

This is great advice! Thank you very much!

Based on recommendations, my DD went with Garmont T8 Bifida boots and Fox River socks. Didn't have a problem at all during Beast. She started breaking in the boots about 6 weeks before reporting for R-day.
