First off don't kill the messenger (me).

As the father of a daughter who also happens to be an Airman Basic currently in endoc school I am concerned by the shear number of sexual assualt accusations in our military and especially so in the USAF. I do not know why but there seems to be in inordinate amount of these accusations in the past few years coming from members and potential members of the USAF. Is (was) there a screening process that did not take place? In talking with DD she did say that sexual assualt prevention and reporting is a topic on an almost daily basis from senior NCO's and officers so it looks like the issue is being addressed. Again, please do not view me as anti AF. In fact when DD told me she wanted to enlist I strongly steered her towards the AF as opposed to USMC and Army.

As the mother of a daughter who became an officer in the Marine Corps, I have to defend the Marines. When the recruiter came to the house I had all the stats on the kitchen table regarding sexual harassment and assault. He really said he couldn't defend the stats but had never seen sexual harassment himself while he had been in the Corps.

Now that she is a former Marine, she said that never did anyone sexually harass her. But, you can't be a shrinking flower either and have to roll with the punches as far as the conversations around you. The men will test you, but you just have to stay above the fray. But it was never aimed at her and her motto was to always act professionally. She had a great experience in the Marine Corps, but honestly, I was worried before she went in.

Please don't get me wrong. I was not bashing the Marine Corp. As a former Marine, almost 30 years ago, I never saw any inappropriate behavior towards WM (women Marines). I steered DD to AF for the career opportunities and the heavy emphasis on education during enlistment.

Thank you Senator McCain

Slightly off topic, but I thought it fit this thread best right now...

Sen. John McCain, who built a potent political career on his record as a Vietnam veteran and ex-prisoner of war, on Tuesday told the leaders of every military branch he cannot in good conscience advise women to join the service as the military grapples to contain and curb its sexual assault epidemic.
