Red green Color deficiency

Many many congrats Kristy!!! To finally have things settled after all of THAT has to be the best feeling in the world. Tell your son thanks for deciding to serve our country. NMMI is a great opportunity! :thumb:

My son signed the official appointment letter to attend NMMI today, guess it's official now! Does anyone know when those going to NMMI will be starting? Also any insight into the computer situation, buy one, lease one....also what would he need there? Graduation is 2 weeks away. Thanks for the help.

Congratulations to your son! I looked at the NMMI calendar and it shows "new cadet matriculation" on Aug. 3rd. Here is the link to the home page: http://www.nmmi.edu/index.htm -- if you click on calendar and then select the month of August at the top, you will see what I am referring to.

Regarding the computer situation...on NMMI's homepage put your cursor on "Military Life" and under the drop down menu click on "Service Academy Prep". Then click on "frequently asked questions". Down at the bottom of that page it talks about the computer specs. My recommendation is don't go buy a computer just to take to NMMI, lease one for the year. Once your son gets to his academy he will be issued a computer so he cannot bring his own. If you already have a computer that fits NMMI's specs, then he could bring it and save the leasing fee. Another way to get information about the computers is to emai Col. Steil who is the service academy prep advisor, her email address is: steil@nmmi.edu. She is very helpful.

Once the AOG gets his official acceptance to civil prep, they will notify NMMI and the school will send you a big envelope full of forms and information. There will be a packing list in there along with everything else.

I was in your spot this time last year and now my son has a week left at NMMI!! :thumb:

P.S. If you have more questions we should probably start a new thread under the forum for Publicly and Privately Funded Military Colleges, rather than continue this in the Dodmerb forum.

Kristymom, I know your son is interested in USMMA & is currently working on his application so I thought to add the following information here. Color perception is a big issue at Kings Point due to the nature of beast so to speak. The kids work on ships & must be able to identify colored markings such as buoys, ect.. Keeping fingers crossed that further testing will prove all is well. Don't give up the ship yet!

QUOTE - "A candidate must have minimum uncorrected visual acuity of 20/400 in each eye, correctable to 20/20 in each eye. The refractive error to correct the vision to 20/20 must not be greater than plus or minus 6.0 diopters in any meridian; there cannot be more than 3.00 diopters of astigmatism present; and the maximum difference in power between the eyes may not exceed 3.50 diopters. The candidate must satisfactorily pass the Farnsworth Lantern Test (FALANT) for color perception. If this test is not available, color perception must be determined by the pseudoisochromatic plate test (PIP).Any prospective candidate who has been diagnosed with substandard color vision is not eligible for further consideration. Upon reporting to the Academy, all plebes are subject to an eye examination. Those who fail to meet the Academy's visual requirements at that time will be disenrolled."

Does the USNA use the Farnsworth Lantern Test when they screen the plebes?

Applicants who do not obtain 12 or more passing plates on the PIP test, then undergo testing using the FALANT at USCGA, USMMA, and USNA.

Larry is that the point that USNA Plebes are given the, Marine Option or out if they fail?

Tha question would be better addressed to USNA Admissions. I do NOT know the current correct answer and do NOT want to steer you wrong. Long day! Calling it quits and logginf off tonight:thumb:
