What drives this determination? DD is 5’2” and 137lbs

Q1: can she call to confirm results?

Q2: DD is an athlete. Lacrosse and daily strength training with a trainer. what is best approach to resolve?

According to the table, she is under the max. weight for her height. My DS was above the max, had to use the measurements and was fine.

BMI for 5’2” and 137lbs is 25.1 which is overweight.

Normal is 18.5-24.9
Overweight is 25-29.9
Obesity is greater than 30

If her weight were 136, then BMI is 24.9 and she would have been good to go.

Did they want your DD to get a tape test for body fat %?

Ouch. That’s a lot of work for being 1lb overweight.

Heck I bet if she took her weight first thing in the morning, she’d be 2-3lbs lighter.

I think the best way to resolve it is to lose a few pounds. Get re-weighed, done.

She will lose 10-12 pounds that first summer if she gets in, anyway. Losing weight is simple math. Take exercise out of the equation and just look at calories, and you lose one pound for every 3,500 calories you take out of your diet. That's 500 calories a day. With exercise and less calories, it's pretty easy to lose 2 pounds every week, if you apply yourself.

Ask the DODMERB tech if they will take a “re-weigh” from a neutral party like the doctor’s office. It’s really just 1 lb over the limit. It’s shame to have to under go a full work-up just to rule out a pathologic cause for being “overweight.”

If you follow the strict instructions, then the doctor will have to draw blood to check for hypothyroidism, diabetes, etc...

And then DODMERB is asking for her menstrual history. Look at the DODI, If her pattern falls outside the guidelines, then she’s DQ. Get this, many young ladies 17-18 years old fall outside those guidelines, but are normal FOR THEM.

I despise the BMI. Why?

When I was an IC athlete at USAFA I was 6'2" and 225lbs (my coach said I needed to beef up to 265, which I didn't do). That (225) gave me a BMI over 28 which says I'm overweight/unhealthy. At that time I had a single-digit body fat and was in the greatest physical condition of my life. I can't tell you how many of my classmates, after graduation and upon arriving at UPT, were "weighed in" upon arrival and then sent to the flight surgeon for a mandatory counseling session prior to being put on what we called the "fat boy program." Each of us sent over was viewed by the doctor, and sent back to the flight line. We were extremely fit (oh to be that way again...)

All that being ranted, if it's just a couple of pounds, the easiest way to make this "go away" is to lose them and be done.

Just my humble rant/opinion.

Steve

Update: There was a typo in the report 106 vs 136 (actual).

This triggered the Abnormal BMI.

Solution: Trust but Verify! Call DODMERB if something seems off. Manage your packet and don’t assume that it will sail through error free.
