Roller coaster I: Get You (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘27 🎢

Commissioning is set for Friday May 24th, so I would guess (and that's all it is) it would be on Wednesday (5/22) that week.
It is not yet on the calendar.
Pretty sure its the week before, maybe the 15th? Same as last year. Seems the goal is to keep commissioning week clear for families now.

My understanding is that plebes are shotgunning next year. Others as well. And that they already know their new companies.

This is an opportunity to ‘start over’. A good thing for kids not feeling like they fit in.

Idk how it is now but Mids used to be ranked, to include a social element. If that’s a thing, perhaps he is struggling with that realization. He has to BE a good mate, to have good mates. My oldest plebe year roomie was ranked dead last ‘socially’. He was super smart, but spent all his time in his school work and books.

The good news? That can change with effort. Like anything else. He was coached and remediated, and ended up being an amazing mate and ranked highly.

Idk if that’s the problem or not but it does happen. It’s a thing. And it can be changed like all things.
Shotgunned or scrambled or a combo in order to grow the number of companies?

That's my understanding as well. They are also going to have to do that with the upperclass too as they will need enough to balance out the new company sizes. I wonder if they will take volunteers, or if they will be voluntold.

It will offer more detailer opportunities, which is good for the rising 2/C and 1/C ('26 and '25).

I was able to take my plebe to the Alley Restaurant last Thursday plus 2 other plebes from her company. I'm not sure if their parents are on here, but they should pat themselves on the back. Very grateful boys who appreciated the food. They were polite, inquisitive, and actually asked questions. I suppose others may not be surprised, but without fail my midshipmen interactions have consistently been positive.

Questions about the coming summer. Before Block Zero training, do the Plebes need to move all their stuff out? Or is that during the commissioning week? Can the more experienced parents share what to expect for the coming summer?

We will be in DTA for Commissioning Week celebrating with our friends from CO 2024, so I would like to be mentally prepared to move things. Thanks.

Guess it all depends on where you live and if are you willing to store their crap and return it to them before reform. We picked up our son’s stuff and several of his friends stuff and stored it for them over the summer at the end of plebe year. Since then we have not had to store anything. Some stuff has since been stored at the sponsors house or even in his car now that he has one there. I have heard of some getting shared storage fcailities for the summer and they do get some storage on the yard as well. So I guess the real answer is it depends. Best of luck just know it will all work out as they are figuring it all out.

They will be told when they need to be out but generally, its not before they leave for training or leave. Back in the dark ages when I was a mid, I took a seabag and suitcases with me and the rest I stored in basement lockers and at Sponsor's house. My parents were never involved at all. When my son was a mid, he never asked for help on this so we did not get involved. I think that he did what I'd done in the past but honestly, that was on him and we would have helped if he asked for it. Full disclosure: As was the case with me, he had a car in the area from Youngster year on so the only time he might have needed help would have been after plebe year and he handled it.

Ditto the above for both of my boys. In fact, my oldest walked all his stuff to gate 1 for transport to wherever he stored it. He was salty that boy #2 had the use of a car on the yard, bc big brother could drive as an upperclass.

I think oldest stored at sponsor. And then a shared storage beyond that. Boy #2 was always shared storage. I was never involved.

I’m sure if you are local and can help, that’s great. But they really do figure it out. Everyone is doing the same thing, and in the same boat. Almost #PlebeNoMore!!

BTW, it’s good training. I’ve got one that’s going to be PCS’ing. I have no clue how he will figure all that out…but no doubt he will. Not even a small doubt.

Kid brings stuff back and forth all the time. :p

This weekend, he took back a bunch of Magic cards to play with his friends, and left some other stuff in preparation for Spring Break next weekend. Of course, we're local.

Be warned, getting on the Yard during commissioning week activities can be tricky. Last year, I made the mistake of trying to do it after the Blue Angels. Oops. Long afternoon in the car!!!

Earlier the better to start moving stuff.

Another question..will Plebes in Block 0 training be back at the Academy to participate in Color Parade and Commissioning Day?

If they are gone, as in to Norfolk or wherever, do not expect them to be transported back to USNA for graduation week activities.

Now if the training is at USNA, it could be different but I'd expect them to be training, not spectating or marching.

All my kid told me is when he will be off for the summer. So, do mids stay at the same training location for the two other blocks? Say they got West coast for protramid, does that mean they stay in California for the 2 blocks?
