Starting this thread for you guys and your journey now that I-Day is complete and your young ones are starting on their adventure!!

Congrats to all mids, parents, family, and friends of the United States Naval Academy class of 2027!! Enjoy the roller coaster!

For PPW, I checked AIRBNB and there are 490 different types of accomodations ranging from apartments across from the Chapel to river fronts. And if this is not your cup of tea, then there's Crown Plaza across the mall, 4 miles from Bancroft.

For those parents following from home, my guess is that all the Plebes were rudely awakened by loud music (and not the kind they "like") and screaming at around 0500 this morning and have had little time to do anything all day except react to Detailer stimuli.

In the next few weeks, they will move quickly from "civilian" to "military". It can be quite a jolt to the system for some, but as they get acquainted with their peers they will help each other along the way. In the weeks ahead, they will form strong bonds with their shipmates (and even the mention of the word "shipmate" will slowly become a source of good-natured derision among their ranks). With time, they will begin to realize that Plebe Summer isn't so much about them as it is about the Detailers who are learning how to lead. Their primary job as Plebes will be to become the best followers they can be, because you can't lead if you've never followed anyone. Six or seven weeks is precious little time for the Detailers to turn these civilians into Midshipmen who will be ready to join the rest of the Brigade at reform in the Fall. Detailers have a difficult job ahead of them and often get less sleep than the Plebes.

I don't mean to paint a bad picture for you parents. What they will go through in the next several weeks will be great for them. It really will. They will grow and become more confident. If you are lucky enough to visit them during Plebe Parents Weekend, you will be flabbergasted at how they have changed into decidedly more adult versions of themselves. Next year as 3/C MIDNs, they will look back on Plebe Summer and think to themselves "wow, that was so easy". It's good. They are fine. Don't worry.

Talking to my kid yesterday about his PS, he said that he and others felt the poop really didn't hit the fan until July 4th, which for them last year was the first Monday. Wondering if they ease into it more now than they used to? If that is the case, the real fun will begin for '27 on the 3rd. ;)

The oddest things show up in my YouTube feed.

For anxious parents with no incoming data in this communications blackout on how your plebe is doing, a first, I am sure. This video is about the speed your plebes are living (existing), pulling together as a team to get things done. This video started my day with a laugh. Completely civilian, but they had the look of mids or cadets. Offering some laughter to break the tension until First Phone Call. And - a tip on that, pick up ALL calls, because their phone may have died or can’t get a good signal, so they are using a detailer’s.

But wait, there’s more!

Looking through the Where's Waldo pics...why are they wearing colored wrist bands? It says portable human on them. Does the color correspond with their company? Also I noticed some of the plebes in the noon formation are wearing two names tags. This is all very new to us so just curious.

Color corresponds to their running group level.

Multiple name tags is typically a ‘result’ of forgetting theirs, and therefore out of uniform. Idk the record but ive seen LOTS of name tags before. You will see various oddities.

Isn’t the two name tags a punishment for forgetting their name tag?

I thought the colors represented their ranking in the mile or 1.5 mile run - there are 7 groupings from fastest to slowest?

Back at home since Saturday, adapting to the change w/o DD and DS (still have an incoming freshman that keeps us busy). I'm so thankful to technology, we have seen pics of them almost every day, I found one where my DD was smiling to the camera, that tells me is not that bad for her :wiggle:

This is what I got
BLACK: Fastest
SILVER
BRONZE
BLUE
PURPLE
GREEN
WHITE:
Slowest Group
ORANGE: Wounded

Some don't have it in their wrist but on their canteen or maybe forgot in their rooms?

I saw a couple of plebes with 4 name tags. 😆
During son’s limited by Covid plebe summer I didn’t see him, but saw a plebe with seven name tags. Not a fast learner/adaptive person, or possibly someone who was helping his/her shipmates more than themselves, which isn’t a bad thing.

One year, DD was a first-set detailer. Another year, she was in second-set leadership. She’d say that the real fun starts when second set takes over. Can’t let the plebes get too comfy. 😳

Wearing multiple name tags is punishment for any number of reasons. In my son's case, it was because he wore the wrong shirt during the Independence Day fireworks display. The punishment actually serves a purpose besides slight embarrassment. In the same amount of very limited time to get ready as everyone else, the plebe now has to put on two name tags that are perfectly lined up. Or three, four...

Attention to detail runs deep.

It’s also a lesson for fellow plebes to double-check their own uniforms AND look right or left at a classmate.

Yes, this is what I received from Thornton Photography also. According to letter we received it was based on 1.5 mile run. Ours did it in 9:38. And yes I am a proud papa.
