My Son received his email stating Active duty eligible but will depend on his branch selection and interviews because he’s ranked at the bottom! Anyone have experience with situation?

Supposedly it's based on "Talent Based Branching". No more trying to game the system. But then my son's friend as an MS4 got infantry even though it was her last choice.
Is your son willing to BRADSO or branch detail early on to eventually end up in his preferred branch?
I met a MS4 over the weekend who is going NG, aviation after graduation. Then hopes to evetually get NG, on AD since he wasn't a GRF scholarship. He told me he isn't high enough on the OML to get Aviation-AD.

I don’t think my son even considered the possibility of him getting his last choice which is infantry. He mentioned BRADSO. Might be a good idea for him.

This question is probably best suited for a cadre member, but anyone with knowledge please chime in. Is OMS/OML used for branch assignments or not? I know it's used to designate DMG, and it's used to determine AD for those who request AD, but once the AD determination is made, does it come into play any further? Or is it all then a matter of interviews vs how the branches rate you? A corollary to that, I guess, is whether the branches see OMS/OML in designating a cadet most preferred, etc.?

P.S. For anyone wondering, this pertains only to Army ROTC, which wasn't expressed in the thread title.

"Got my OML ranking back today. I was number XXXX in the country, out of about 7,000. The top 3,331 were designated for active duty preferred. So pretty good, I wouldve liked higher obviously but I knew my gpa wasnt high enough. I only get 2 extra points for majoring in CS, so people who had a higher gpa in easier majors got more points. Either way the interviews are more important than OMS now. The branch preferences come out on the 18th"

And mentioning DMG, is it top 20% graduating cadets in the nation or out of those going AD? The way I read it, it’s the former. Regarding branching, I think I’ve seen @clarksonarmy mention that OML is used for tie breakers now?? Hopefully he’ll chime in.

I do not know for sure, but I read that it's top 20% of AD.

Take a look at pg 2, 3-2. My understanding is that ALL MSIII cadets are ranked on the national OML and then its the top 20% of that. Nowhere does it say that its only the top 20% of those who qualify for AD. Am I missing/misunderstanding something?

I agree with your interpretation. Here is what the reg says:

"(1) Be in the top 20 percent of the ROTC National OML as determined by the USACC OML Model during the fiscal year Senior ROTC accession process. USACC, Deputy Chief of Staff, G–1 will announce the names of those eligible for DMG designation when component results are released."

Sounds like those who are DMG eligible should know by now since component results were released this week.

Although, seems like PMSs are doing it differently. I think cdts know their rank (in relation to AD?) but not necessarily DMG. Maybe they can choose to award it or not as the year goes?? Not a clue.

Only active duty eligible came out or NG. They will get branch rankings or whatever they call them these days next week then they will be able to re-rank their branch order and find out branch and active/reserve/NG in December.

DS says there’s 3,060 AD spots and he’s ranked 3,100. What are the chances he’ll still get AD? That’s what he’s hoping for.

I’m curious how many total cadets there are this year? Still trying understand, Is the ranking strictly based on OML?

My understanding is OML will be used as a tie breaker if there a two competing for a branch. Correct me if I’m wrong. It’s a shame for my DS because he came is as an MS3, knowing nothing and struggled a bit. Has been doing great since advance camp and that may be the only reason he was still recommended for AD. I imagine he k owes his OML score but he hasn’t told me! I think there are 7,000 cadets total? Correct me again if I’m wrong.

So to follow up on this, how DO they get their ranking number then?
