Hi, forum! I am currently stuck between two choices and was hoping someone could help. I am currently active duty and applying for an ROTC scholarship, but I would much rather finish school and attend OCS instead, as long as I could afford to go to the school. My post 9/11 GI bill will pay a good chunk of the school, but not all, so I was waiting to see what kind of aide I would receive. My question is: If I turn down the ROTC scholarship would I be disqualified from OCS in the future?

There are no guarantees for OCS...OCS is used to backfill what isn't filled by USMA and ROTC. If us ROOs do our job OCS slots will be scarce. My advice to you is to do Green to Gold, which I'm assuming is the ROTC scholarship you are talking about. If you don't get the scholarship you can still go non scholarship. It will also help for you to join the guard or reserves while in college, and use tuition assistance and drill pay to augment the GI bill. We currently have 5 cadets in our Battalion, out of Fort Drum who are using this technique. Why would you attend school, and then go to OCS when you graduate, when you could go to school, take ROTC, and commission when you graduate?

Check this website out for more info on Green to Gold, CPT Smith is the expert on Green to Gold.
