It seems as if my DS was just awarded a national AROTC 4 year scholarship. His portal changed to Boarded yesterday, however one of his school choices has already e mailed him to tell him he is a recipient. My question is what would that scholarship cover at say VMI or Citadel? The state school that notified him explained how the benefits would work there but not sure about the military schools. I suppose they will reach out to him if they were on the list of schools.

+1 to the above.
The Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship benefit package covers full tuition and mandatory fees at all of our participating schools. In addition to tuition and mandatory fees, the student is provided a book allowance of $1200 per year, (to be divided equally between semesters or quarters depending on the school’s system), and a generous tiered stipend.

All scholarship or contracted cadets are entitled to a stipend (subsistence allowance) authorized by law. The stipend is $420 a month during the academic year only.

+1 to AJC. It's the same for any school. At an SMC this probably means it will not cover uniforms regardless of which option one selects.

Same situation exactly for my DS - found out this afternoon. He has a combination of state and private schools which he applied to so curious to see how that works. Congrats to your son!

At Norwich my son received money from the Army to compensate for him providing his own uniforms (via purchasing for the Corp of Cadets).
I think it was $600 and I think more than once.

Citadel - AROTC scholarship - covers tuition/books/military labs OR room and board. (pretty sure it will be the same for any schools)

2.5 for regular classes. And, I think, 3.0 for the ROTC curriculum
Thank you for all the answers. I read once contract that said a 2.0 but that would seem very low?
I guesss we could ask each admissions representative of each school to see what they say.

The GPA to keep the scholarship isn't up to the school, although the school may have their own requirements and restrictions on GPA.

Good to know. I bet they would know what it is. Like I said the contract that I read last night said 2.0 but I am not sure how recent it is. I found it off a link on this bard.

Believe it or not, the minimum GPA required to maintain an Army ROTC Scholarship is 2.0 per semester AND cumulative. This information is contained in the Cadet Command Pamphlet 145-4: Enrollment, Retention and Disenrollment Criteria, Policy and Procedures. You google up a PDF of this pamphlet online.

MNRC2018 - others have stated what the ROTC scholarship provides. 4 year ROTC National scholarship cadets who enroll at The Citadel are eligible for the Armed Forces Supplement, currently $3,500/yr if they meet a minimum SAT/ACT and GPA score. This is an institutional merit scholarship, and my recollection is the cadet must maintain a 3.0 GPA. There are also other academic merit scholarships depending on degree program, but the applicant needs to inquire with admissions for details of applying. Again, these typically require the cadet maintain a 3.0.

Wow the academic scholarships at Texas A&M are requiring a 3.5 which is pretty steep. Thanks for posting!

Thank you, I thought I had seen that on a document I stumbled on but was unsure. DS is having second thoughts on VMI and the Citadel now that he has what amounts to a full ride to U of Mississippi. They will match room and board. Plus he has a nice academic scholarship from them as well. Wish we could find out one way or another if he gets into USMA. That would help with decision making.
