ROTC selection process

I will be a 2025 applicant and I am wondering how the ROTC selection process work. So once my full applications, recs, transcript etc are all complete and submitted, it goes to a board and they select the scholarship recipients. Do I know which school I get "matched" with for the scholarship to at that point or does that come after my school acceptance is done? I guess what I am really wondering is should I put reach, in zone and safety schools as part of the school 1-5 ROTC preference or should I list the more competitive schools only with the thought that I may get in. Thanks!

What ROTC branch? Army, Navy, Navy MO, or AF?

Generally, the scholarship is completely separate from the college admissions application.

If you receive the scholarship, it is NOT a guarantee of acceptance to your no. 1 school choice.

There are many posts on ranking strategies, but I always feel you should rank the schools in the order of preference. For Army ROTC, you can usually change schools after acceptances are received.

+1 to AROTC-dad. Each program doesn't it differently.

You can use an AFROTC scholarship at any school that has an AFROTC unit, although they will ask you to list some, and ask again which school you plan to use it at when awarded a scholarship;

Army and Navy tell you which school you have been placed at, although you can try to transfer it (after it's awarded) to a different school if you were not accepted there; or you've changed your mind about that school. Both programs will try to award it to your first choice if possible.

I would always recommend listing reach, in zone and safety schools, but it's not required. If you want to list only reach schools and apply to others for the case where you're not accepted, you can always try to transfer the scholarship. You can usually transfer it, but like most things in life there is no absolute guarantee.

He is looking at Navy and Air Force. So do the schools also get to pick the students for their battalion? Is it like a match of school and student preferences or is it more like the students are divied out according to how much funding is available overall? Is there a specific number or list of how many slots/positions each ROTC unit has?

Based on my experience, the review board's goal is to award the scholarship to one of the applicants top choices. Later on in the award cycles, it is more common for scholarships to be awarded to schools that are not your top choice. I have not seen a list showing the allocations per school.

Is this the candidate or the parent?
